I listen to some oldschool hiphop vinyls on my turn table while playing some chess. :)
Does listening to music while playing chess distract you?

I question, cause I am a musician and singer but I also play classical music and play chess not so well for 40 years. Modern life is so surounded by sounds, bells, cell ringing, cars engines that one could think music is gold for thinking !! Then I could only listen to classical music, I still felt it used important aerea/s of my brain that I need badly for the game (my personal feeling). Then I started listening to Gregorian chants and nothing changed.
I am looking for scientific studies !! Thank you !!
Like to liten to others opin.
I have played while listening to various types of music and I have to say the results are consistent. Whenever I play music and chess at the same time, blunders happen quickly. I think it may be because we are more directly invested in the music than the game.
Some of my fastest losses have come listening to metal, classical, and bebop. Softer classical pieces, smooth jazz and third stream seem to produce the best results but it is still a distraction.

Absolutely not, I listen to Anberlin, Breaking Benjamin, Flyleaf, Red, Skillet (old) and Switchfoot loud!

It depends on your constitution. Music might help if it distract you from anything that cause you distress, one of these are boredom. If you are still having symptoms even though you are doing these device, you might try resting or seek medical help if it becomes serious.
I find that if I'm adequately inebrieated, I don't even notice.
