Does Opponent Rating Influence Your Play?

Psychologically, does your opponent's rating influence your play against them?

E.g., Against someone rated much lower than you, are you less careful?  ...And do you try super hard or give more credit to someone rated very highly?  And does it influence you guys in  other ways as well?

Crowie98

When I verse someone higher, I feel less pressured to win but when I play someone lower, I sometimes overthink and try too hard.

coalescenet

When they are higher rated, I concentrate much better.

I try not to think about it.......but I have to be honest.....IT MAKES ME NERVOUS!!!

zheannaftw

Sometimes I take it into consideration, but being such a low level myself, it is hard to have rating become a big part of my playing style. I have beaten players ranked 250 points higher than me and I have lost to players below me. I tend to take my time more against higher ranked players, even when playing blitz games.

My rule of thumb is to always assume my opponent can see what I see.

To be honest,YES!I get a bit intimidated by my opponents ratings. But i feel relaxed against lower rateds and have much more confidence

Isnt it obvious what he said?

No, that's why I asked.

TheBigDecline

I'm more relaxed when matched up against weaker guys, and like on drugs against stronger ones. (in a positive sense)

Yesterday I fought that guy 350 points above me and felt like in a trance through the entire game. And I won!!!! (can't be bothered to display it here, but it's my best game on Chess.com so far)

He meant he feels less pressured against those rated higher than him cuz the chances of them winning are higher while he feels pressured to win against lower rateds and tries too hard to do so.

Classic chess.com.   One person ..... clueless.   Another person......tuned in.

A good reason for the writer to play higher rated players.

And how is this a good reason for the writer err..I mean OP to play Higher Rated players?

lol.  I think I had a little bit of that too.  Maybe it's human nature?

I tend to get a little sloppy against really low rated opponents and will try stuff on them lol.

Against isgnicantly higher rated opponents I may just play straight up and maybe feel a bit more intense.  I dunno.,  I guess it depends on how they play too.  If they don't match their rating, then I may not feel as nervous.  Some people don't seem to play as well as their rating suggests and vice versa.

IUt  feels like judging a book by its cover ....and then adjusting according to the actual content.  lol

Suvel

sometimes

Crowie98

I thought I made it clear! I would rather verse someone higher than lower.

ChessisGood

Actually, I am much more careful against lower rated players. I play rather dynamic, attacking chess against higher-rated opponents.

kikvors

Yes. It's a habit I need to get rid of.

Against players rated too far above me I give up too easily, against players rated too far below me I lose objectivity and try too hard to finds wins in equal positions.

He's just being picky about your use of the word 'verse'.
