does playing both side helps?
I've always felt that you should learn both sides of an opening if you want to learn how to play it. It is much better if you know both the strengths and the weaknesses of your chosen opening. After all, if you know how to play against your chosen opening, then you know what to look out for when you're playing it, yourself, and the best ways to handle your opponent's opposition.
For example, I play the Sicilian Dragon as black, but I'm also quite comfortable playing the Yugoslav attack against it as white. Since I know the Yugoslav attack, if I'm playing the Dragon and seeing white going for a Yugoslav, I know what they're planning on doing and I know of several different ways to play against it. Similar things happen when I'm playing the Yugoslav against my opponent's Dragon.
