If I select 5 secs per move is easier to beat computer than 10 secs per move? Wink

I may not be able to answer this question, but it depends on which computer you're talking about, and the search criteria of that computer.

Ok I will write more details :)

I have installed Arena with Stockfish engine. I installed big opening book and now im going to play chess seriously. But I have a problem. I want know how can I affect computer/engine (stockfish) playing strenght. I know I can set depth to affect playing strenght. But does time per move affect engine playing strenght? I think if is time per move longer (20 secs) is more difficult beat engine than if is time per move shorter (5 secs). Can somebody write answer to this question?

Sure, it will affect the difficulty, since you are effectively reducing the depth that it can achieve by limiting the time. But it will achieve more or less depth depending on the complexity of the position.

Are you using the same amount of time as Stockfish is using? If so, then no, time per move will not affect the engine strength (elo). However, giving the computer more time per move WILL allow it to search deeper; But then, YOU'RE also searching deeper if you use more time per move.

Btw, you do know that recent versions of Stockfish have a skill setting (from 0 to 20) that allows you to change the engine strength? Just go into the Stockfish engine configuration and change "Skill Level". (Arena menu: Engines --> Engine 1 (assuming Stockfish is engine #1) --> Configure.)

The more time you give the computer to calculate, the more effectively it will play. This stands to reason.

In addition to changing the Stockfish skill level, you could also set the Arena "Levels --> Adjust" to a certain ply depth or total number of nodes for each move.
