Does Watching GM play chess, makes you better?

I always ask myself do I get better if I’ll watch Magnus play or is it better if I play a chess game

Kind of the same with me.

If the game is commentated by a superior chess player who analyzes the moves, then it helps me see what they are thinking or why the positional move was made.  Without the commentary, I see moves but have no idea why they were made and as the GM is playing another GM most of the time, it is not always readily available to see the intent of the move right away or ever without help.

Even when I have watched games in real time, with live commentary the machinations of 2000+ are extremely interesting to hear.  The speed with which they evaluate the positions (pattern recognition etc) is admirable.

But if I just watch a GM game without help from someone superior, I think I am missing way too much to benefit, or worse, assuming the move was made for a completely wrong reason.

^ And that is completely from the REALLY low level player perspective, and if not, at least this low level players perspective.

it really helps watching people like yermolinsky and hess comment on gm games in real time.

Help at the innerr circle club

i think it helps everyone. perhaps they go too quickly for some of the audience, but that is due to the time pressures of the event itself.

Neither that nor this...

You get better if you start to drink beer.

Personally watching gm games really just inspires me. Whenever I don’t feel I like chess anymore I just spend a day or two watching them play. Just wow.

Watching GM games is like watching paint dry. Better to study the games of the masters.

Once in a while I see something I understand, but mostly I’m like a dog watching television.
