Does your rating actually matter?

I mean normally it does't make sense but if you play against other people and you can't think on your feet you will get a bad rating even though you're great.

Ronnocus12341

Well rating is quite literally a measure of how good you are at chess. If you can't think quickly, just play a slow gamemode like rapid or classical.

CraigIreland

It matters because it's how we get fair matches but as with all externalities, if you're attaching your Chess rating to your ego then it's probably not going to make you happy.

Chuck639

Truth is, online ratings are next to meaningless compared to OTB.

You will learn online is a different pool of players and secondly, online play is geared towards speed chess where quantity trumps quality of play.

HaventSeenAllMoves

Ratings don't really matter. You will always have someone 200+ higher than you creating a new account and demolishing you. This doesn't happen at your local club or in OTB tournaments.

MaetsNori

Online ratings aren't that big of a deal, but they can definitely be a good way to measure one's improvement and/or to set goals by.

blueemu

Online ratings are mostly for bragging about... or moaning about.

It doesn't. I lost to every titled player in every mode and only won one time against an FM because of luck I guess.

A slow gamemode like rapid? Sounds paradoxical. Rapid is still what is says, rapid.

At least 10 min, 15|10 are very much rapid, not slow.

Maybe, just maybe 60 min (which is classified under rapid here) can be called slow, although it is far from actual slow games like 90|30.

Normally we play other people and have to think on our feet. Also normally most folks have a bad rating and think they're great.

Normally they even call themselves GOAT and have a low rating.

Very normal.

Here at Ccom rating figures are only matters for you to see how you develop in chess and when you search for an opponent of certain strength.

orlandovonarrakon

It matters to give people an idea of their level of skill, but comparing you online rating to OTB is like comparing your rapid rating to bullet... You can be good at both, or be great at one and bad at another.

I mean for most people (who play both) their bullet and rapid ratings at least reflect each other in a way, but it's not the same.

Online ratings matter to me more than NCFP and FIDE. I only participate in tournaments once every three years. I am proud of my 1700 NCFP and 1400 FIDE. What matter most to me am a self-taught solid chess lover. happyhappy

Nice

Thanks. I self-study and try to balance my bullet, blitz, rapid. I also play online classic games. OTB maybe in the future I will play a lot. I just love home chess.
