Not only does it not start at zero, ratings can't go below 100.

Come again?

i always thought fide starts at 0, and uscf at 100, which is why a persons FIDE rating is usually 100 points lower than the uscf

Unrated is undefined but if you look at my picture it shows an unrated player with new and old ratings of zero.

I read a lot about this trying to figure out why my rating went back to zero even though all of those games should be wins and I won’t lie the subject of undefined ratings is a bit confusing so I decided to just keep playing and let it sort itself out. Lol.

But since I’ve seen pairing sheets with zero on it for unrated players I have to believe you start with zero. I have also see first time players be asked there Chess.com ratings to use as a supplement until they can get an actual rating.

I get it zero, unrated or undefined isn’t an actual rating and your first rating is decided by an algorithm after your first win, loss or whatever.

Ask yourself, if it starts at 100 why is someone’s new/ old rating 0?

Neither rating system starts at any value. The USCF has some formulas to seed a rating that gets used to actually rate the games played in an event but it depends on a few things. The rating system and process is online if you want to look it up.

The lowest achievable rating for USCF OTB play is 100p; 100 is the rating floor. The lowest rating that FIDE will publish is 1000. It also doesn't start with 1000; they have a formula to derive your performance as well and use that.

so after your first fide tournament you will be at least 1000?

Bad_Dobby_Fischer

that doesn't make sense, why is a player;s fide rating usually lower than the uscf one?

That is not correct. If you do not have performance of at least 1000 for FIDE you will not be rated, no matter how many FIDE rated games you play. It used to be 2000, went down to 1500 I think, and is now 1000. The process is the same now as then and the performance across your games has to meet the minimum rating, along with a minimum score and facing at least 3 players with established FIDE ratings, or you don't get a published rating.

Martin_Stahl

For example, I have played in a FIDE rated event (well one standard for sure and one game in a blitz rated tourney). In the standard event I scored 2.5 points but not one of my opponents had an established FIDE rating, so I don't get one either. I need to face at least 3 players with established ratings and have at least 1 point and have a performance rating of over 1000 to get a rating.

Bad_Dobby_Fischer

oh, ok

AstroHorse7

1001 is the start rating.
