The double attack is about one piece attacking two enemy pieces and only one can be defended or moved. We could break it down into three points. There are two points which a re attacked,call critical targets. The third is the attacker. Though this is called double attack; there maybe more than two points of attack includ an important square.The double attacker can be and piece including pawns. The most common is the knight. Examples will be in a file.
The knight’s secret its peculiaries way of moving over the board. One should become very familiar by practicing moving the knight around the board to all the squares.The sudden appearance of a knight on a certain square is sometimes difficult to predict;especially when the knight travels two or three moves to get to the base square.The pieces on tactical targets of knights’s double attack often do not communicate that is cannot fefend each other. The tactical targets cannot take the knight unless they are knight themselves. The value of the knight is often relatively low compared with the value of its targets.
Major pieces and especially kings are normal targets for knights using double attack tactics.
If one of the targets of the tactic is covered ,the the double attack tactic is more difficult to spot.
There are two things you should keep in mind when you study or look for a double attack.1. Make sure you have checked all possible sequences for occupying the three different points and 2.Keep in mind you might have to create the second tactical target.
A double attack with the king as a tactical target usually gives the attacker an extra tempo.Of course the king is a potential tactical target but the squares next to the king also have to be considered as potential tactical targets.`
Look out for undefended pieces.They can make candidates for double attacks.A check should always be considered as a potential tactical target.You can look for the double attack in any phase of the game. Watch for it for either side on any move. The double attack can be used to win material out right, exchanges, or to weaken your opponemt piece placement.It could be used in king attacks.This is the basis of most and can be cosidered the most important. Deep study and practice is sugguested.
