Draw by insufficient material??

Just finished a game where my opponent ran out of time, but it said "Draw by insufficient material". I played black and had a king and a knight. White had a king, a bishop, and several pawns. Why a draw? Seems like I should have won by time and my score should have gone up instead of 0 from a draw. What's the deal?

You cannot give checkmate with only a knight. Thus you have insufficient material and it is a draw if your opponent runs out of time.

Ah I see, that makes sense.  Thanks!

The site uses essentially the USCF insufficient material rules and king + knight is not sufficient. They don't use FIDE rules where mate just has to be possible.

What does the Gilco classification mean?
