Even though I could not win this game, there is a checkmate possible with this position which is not forced

Like if in some position I get the king cornered along with the rook such that my king covers the opponent’s king’s getaway squares, then in such case I may be able to deliver checkmate with my knight

It should be a win under FIDE rules but chess.com use a different rule because it's easier to program.

It requires an additional check of the pieces left

You can’t checkmate with only a king and a knight. He, with a king and a rook, could have done it, but he didn’t have time. This configuration is considered as draw. That’s the rule. Such as repeating the same moves three times in a row or a stalemate.
