I dream to be a GM. But it may not be possible...

I started chess 1year 4months ago. Some people at this time will already be like 1400. My coach and parents really appreciate my strength.

I'll be a IM or GM SOMEDAY :)

I dream to be the person who punishes those who dream to be a GM

Frankly NO,  not ALL things are possible.

Nevertheless if its your dream, work hard to keep it alove.  It also helps to have Acheivable goal along the way.  What is your immediate goal? have you been making progress on it??

Not this again.

The level that a 1100 player imagines as a GM is actually about 1700.

Frankly disagree. You are not ambitious so this does not mean everything is Impossible

Tongue Out

Had a feeling someone would say that Harish.

its a deeply contentious debate whether someone should ignore big goals, and take chess a few concepts at a time...

or Proudly declare they are going to the be Next WC, and hold to their dream- even though they are 65- ill and have mathematically no chance to acheive GM in their (short) lifetime.

REgarding me. Its more than a bet.  I'm definitely an internet warrior. It IS impossible to become a GM when you don't make the trips to Tournaments-

and (correct me if I'm wrong), its actually quite a special tournament when Gm norms are possible.

Anyways, Its surely not bad to progress, and to hope and obsess on chess improvment.  but a GM title is a LONG ways off from 1100. one will need to be very patient.

... and I still think (not to be contentious- if no one has ever done I.e. some chatty chess.com patzer becoming World championship)

that is probably because it truly IS impossible.

IOW, if the Op is young, playing tournaments and getting coached; yes, perhaps he can become a GM (with ALOT of work, commitment and tournaments).  if the OP is 30+. then NO. he cannot become GM.  no one has ever done that.

I am 12. My coach says 3 more years and you will be an IM. This really encourages me.

It takes 10000 hours to master ANYTHING.

I never lost hope and will not.

Gl to me!

BTW great patzer you should join The Kingdom of patzers

I am 1400 so I'll probably achieve my goal someday..

Harish, your doing great.

I've seen your posts and sense that you are gaining strength quickly (relatively).

I'm only saying to be reasonable.  you have excellent prospects and this is a Great time in your life to focus on chess.  my kids (at 12) were very half-hearted about the game- and still they gained.

the Peril for you is to lose focus and become distracted on something else-  if you can avoid that, I'm sure you can be master (IM).

for an adult, it IS important to be reasonable.  Nobody Knows exactly what is possible.  I'm close to a strong player who as an adult has Clearly been gaining Lots of strength.   I would say he is 1500 ---> 1800 and has occasional performance ratings approaching 2000.

Nevertheless, his motivation is not to Be Gm.  there hasn't been a gm (ever) that was a low rated adult.  he's bound to fight plateau's as his strength increases- its important to be patient and determined.

his insights and stories are constant reminder (for me) on just how spectacularly strong the Masters really are.

...

we Get ALOT of this sentiment on the Forums. and frankly. 6 months later, you come back and the person who is "definitely going to be GM (and maybe WC)"  is

A) banned for cheating

B) closed his accoujnt

C) hasn't been online in 3 months

all three of these are marks of people that give up.  Surely you Don't HAVE to give up, if you make a thread like this. BUT. one has to wonder.

why write it?  are you feeling discouraged??  then looking at the hardest and loftiest acheivement possible isn't likely to keep you in the game.

Rant done. OP. Good luck.

Thanks buddy.

Some days ago, on last Sunday, while I was returning from my coach's house. I had a feeling that I should stop being a top blogger and admin in my groups. And IMPROVE MY CHESS.

But I've not yet decided what to do.

This really happened to me.

Avatar of LazyChessPlayer3201

for my 2 cents, I say have a smaller goal. Say break 2000, or FM.

The goal to go straight to GM seems pretty hard.

And if you happened to be coached by a GM, I am sure he will tell you if you have a chance.

@Harish,

posting and writing about chess, with others, though, build enthusiasm and passion.

(at least it does for me)

since you need that to improve.  becoming a hermit and just studying books might NOT get you THAT much further ahead.

IMHO.  Harish. your doing great.  don't be anxious about it.  Chillax, and keep up the chess efforts;  writing, reading , and Playing.
