Or you can just enjoy a cold refreshing glass of Kool-Aid during a chess match - then you'll be on a natural high from the deliciousness - OH YEAHHH!!
Drug Testing in competitive Chess

(a particular Miami favorite is a "back ranker," which involves snorting a line of cocaine that stretches from your first rank all the way to the eighth rank),
Kids...Do you think we were all stupid in Miami in the '80's? A "back-ranker" is a line stretching from, say, a8 to h8. A line that stretches from say a1 to a8 is an "open filer".
Snorting Ritalin helps your game more though.
I could be wrong but "back ranker" reminded me of the term back rank mate and easily conjured an image of a rook going from c1 to c8.

You think that's bad - I was recently at a grade school Candyland tournament and I saw the same thing. Except there they called it "visiting Queen Frostine" - really sick what those parents allow their kids to get involved with!

If there are drugs that enhance our natural abilities without harmful effects then we should all use them.
I could really care less if my opponent takes Adderoll or something like that. It might help a little bit but the better player will still win right? I've been prescribed Adderoll, but I can't remember how helpful it was.
Can't imagine what drug, other than caffeine, would benefit a chess player. It's not like they need steroids to lift the pieces
Drugs for ADHD and other conditions when taken by regular people enhances focus and concentration. There have been big problems in the US with school kids taking these drugs to do better on tests
That was probably mentioned in the thread but it was 4 pages long so I didn't read through much of it.

Really? Well tell it to the IOC because you can take steroids, HGH, EPO, amphetamines, antihistamines, do blood doping, and a host of other things that will not hurt you but will definitely increase your athletic performance.
Actually those will pretty much all hurt you and there is scientific data that confirms it. Steroids are actually very bad for the body.
I believe that is where the biggest force against drugs/doping in sports comes from. If you take a substance that will hurt you to win, other people have to also hurt themselves to be competitive.
If a drug with zero negative side effects was to be created there would probably be a strong case for people to be able to use it in competitive sports and games.

I don't know much about most of those except for their names, but don't steroids have harmful effects, or does it depend on which ones you use?
I don't think it's necessarily wrong to improve ourselves with drugs. Outside of competition there is no question in my mind whether or not it is "right" to use drugs to enhance ourselves. It gets a little sketchy of course when we are talking about competition. If those drugs aren't harmful then I think they should all be readily available and the competition is still on a level playing field.

So the FIDE is run by mormon's now? I understand the thought behind it, but it is absolutely retarded. If they have ADD, they get a prescription for Adderol, Riddlin, etc. so if they fail for those, all they have to do is show the Rx. If they get a Dr. to sign off on it (really not hard to get diagnosed with ADD/ADHD to get the meds) they are in the clear... I have read about too much caffine being "illegal" in the higher lvls, but there are several things in energy drinks/suppliments that they really cant regulate. And if it's in an over the counter suppliment, and they say its "illegal" for the player, they can easily get sued. Same with adderol and other Rx drugs. The only way to tell if they are using it at the tournament would be a blood test, otherwise the drugs could be in their system for any number of days/weeks/months, and wouldnt be applicable.
Again, its stupid- If they use these things to study- then the FIDE has nothing to say, but if they use it in a game- the FIDE - is going to ban them or something? And if they are doing urinalysis, they will pull up stuff from the night before, and if I have a tournament im cramming the day/night before- drinking coffee etc. and you can be sure im having some coffee in the morning ( i have several cups every morning anyways) so... I don't get it...
Actually steroids and amphetamines, HGH too, can hurt you
Pretty amazing that you guys both think because something CAN hurt you it should be banned. Of course it can hurt you. Alcohol, aspirin, McDonald's french fries, water, bananas, hot tubs, cigarettes, etc. can all KILL you but are not banned.
Might want to take a look at some of the actual research on those drugs instead of what random people say in passing.
Low level amounts of steroids used over time can cause serious side effects including cancer. Low level amounts of Aspirin used over time have almost no negative side effects.
It isn't that those drugs you listed CAN have negative side effects, it is that they WILL have negative side effects.

It was more in regards to the Rx drugs that they would be testing for. And if the "too high lvls of caffine" kept me from winning a tournament- and the several thousand dollars (for the super GM's several hundreds of thousands) I'm pretty sure a lawsuit would be looked at for discrimination. But like I said, it is extremely easy to get an Rx for ADD/ADHD even if you dont have it. So they cant DQ you for something medically "neccessary"

Low level amounts of aspirin can cause serious side effects such as stomach bleeding. See e.g.

An uncommon chance of stomach bleeding, which is fully treatable and the person would be back to normal after the treatment is a lot different from a chance of cancer in certain type of steroids.
People can, and always will, try to play off how "safe" performance enhancing drugs are. But all of the data is out there which shows otherwise.
Personally I don't care if people take drugs or not. I wouldn't bother watching any sports where it was legal or participate in any games where it was allowed.

"It isn't that those drugs you listed CAN have negative side effects, it is that they WILL have negative side effects."
Is absolutely not true and there is no evidence of that. All of those drugs listed are given to people all the time for therapeutic reasons. The evidence that these drugs WILL have side effects is base don really silly stuff like "prednisone and anabolic steroids are somewhat similar and taking prednisone for a long time is bad for you" or "huge doses of steroids cause serious side effects so small doses must too".
I can tell you that if steroids are bad for you, we should give testosterone suppressing drugs to men. The notion that your naturally occuring amount of testosterone is healthy but increasing it at all is unhealthy is ludicrous. In fact, it's so ludicrous it doesn't even make sense.
And the reason they irradiate people to get rid of cancer is because radiation has no negative side effects?
You treat people with drugs to solve one problem knowing the drugs have the possibility of causing other problems.
Most people who love the idea of drugs refuse to accept they have issues, which makes any discussion typically useless.
I will leave this discussion at this point as I think most of the evidence out there does a good job of showing the negative effects of drugs.

From what people say about memorization studies, it seems farfetched that you would have many if any players who are really good chess, that would have a problem with any of those drugs, because people who take them don't ever get that good.

Seriously, if you win a tournament while high on pot, your prize should be doubled.
Considering it can highten your awareness, while causing you to have an unusual conjuction of stored information in your brain cells, as your brain attempts to save the information from dying cells, it can potentially help you. However, it contributes to a loss of cells and an unnatural network of synapses that make thinking and recalling information more difficult in the long run, hence the condition commomly referred to as "burn out". So it will not help you in the long run. It probably won't help you the first 5 to 10 times you use it either, until you get used to functioning with it's effects.
I am speaking from personal experience and scientific evidence. So don't waste your time with the pseudo-educated crap again. I loved using it to get " in the zone" for many of my favorite activities.
Drug users must be banned permanently from playing chess .Too bad chess.com does not do a drug test on us.
i completely agree
