Hear me out.
Everyone thinks Duolingo and Chess.com are totally different, but they’re actually the same exact experience wearing different skins. Let me give you some examples:
Both apps guilt‑trip you about your streak
• Duolingo: “You missed your lesson… don’t disappoint the owl.”
• Chess.com: “You haven’t done puzzles today. Your streak is dying.”
Both apps make you feel smart… until they don’t
• Duolingo: “Great job! You learned 10 new words!”
• Chess.com: “You solved 3 puzzles!”
Then you try a real conversation or a real game and get destroyed instantly.
Both apps have bots that bully you
• Oscar and Duo Owl: passive‑aggressive notifications
• Chess.com bots: Martin, Nelson, Mittens, etc.
Both will ruin your day in different ways.
Both apps pretend to “teach” you, but really they just throw challenges at you
• Duolingo: “Translate this sentence you’ll never use in real life.”
• Chess.com: “Here’s a puzzle that will never happen in your games.”
both apps make you addicted to leveling up
XP = Elo
Badges = Achievements
Streaks = Streaks
It’s the same dopamine loop
So, people, which one is actually better? Is it Duolingo? Or is it chess.com? *I vote chess.com*
