Hey i've just recently started playing chess and i got a copy of playing winning chess from a local library. I have bought fritz 12 because all of this great things i've heard about it but now i feel like i wasted my money.

all i want to do is set up a board where i can make moves for both white and black to follow the book i am reading but the engine keeps making moves, i found out you can turn off the engine but i was wondering if there was a easier way to do this for such an expensive software?

So even though a key/mouse click sequence turns off the engine in a sofware that 90%+  of all serious players use (and live by!) and you still want something easier?

I think you've got "show threats" turned on and a few other dynamic options as well. Turn that off as well and you might feel a lot better and get a "silent board" that doesn't do anything.  Couldn't hurt to spend a little time getting to know your software and what it is really used for. Might I recommend Steve Lopez's tutorials (google for them, it is easy enough) for any Fritz version to understand how to use it.

I dont know about fritz 12, but in 11 there's this button named: infinite analysis. The engine will stop making moves but the engine will run and advise moves/lines.

This way you can play for both and do all the fun things you want :)

Just go to file-new-position setup. There you can move white and black pieces as long as you want to.

The Lopez articles are archived in chesscafe. The link to get the zip file is

Quite a lot of articles ... appears Steve loves Chessbase products more than anyone else in the world :)
