I know very little about modern chess tournaments and nothing about gambling, but it seems that such activities enrich everyone except for the unlucky betters and the actual participants.

There must be some history of gambling on chess, right?

You have people who gambled on chess on the streets but not in organized events.  Chess and gambling don't go well together.

I'm still trying to figure out who Charles Magnus is.

Sure.  Chaturanga, the Indian game, was often a gambling game that employed dice.   The Perians appropriated the game, first called Chatrang and at this time dice was no longer used for gambling but to determine moves. This game was adopted by the Muslims and called called Shatranj.  They made some changes, among which was forbidding the use of dice according to their laws. Later dice were re-introduced into Shatranj in some areas, but probably not in Islam-controlled areas.

More popularity in chess will bring in more money and more opportunities to chess players.

It is a nice fantasy but all the real money dried up in the late 90's and mainly due to the shenannigens of WC Kasparov.

Use the google machine if you need to learn what happened.

I'm well aware of chess history but I still believe that we can change it.

what would be the appropriate search string for the machine bar?

[90s(chess + money) but not 00s] /p shenanigans & Kasparov?

You see why that google crap is pretty much unuseable for me?

John, if  you would have invested in Google you would not be calling it google crap.  The real money is there, not in betting on chess.

What does this have to do with anything?  Total non sequitur.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was a good movie. Maybe we should concentrate on that?

Actually, speaking of google -- I posted on this popular political discussion forum earlier today (another popular site), asking about what was going on with that Marine that is in jail in Mexico.

That innocuous question prompted page after page of rabid responses of "google it, you lazy bastard!" and "don't you know how to use google?" and the like.

haha.

more power to you. Why are you getting upset with me for agreeing with you, that you are a man who has bene on here for 7 years who lacks the ability to do what most would say is pretty simple"

He who fails to learn from history is doomed to repeat it.

I completely agree.  We learn from our mistakes/failures and move forward, we don't just quit because things didn't work out.  You figure out what didn't work and you come up with a solution.

Seriously, there are more worthy and noble pursuits to put time and effort to work on making more popular than chess.
