Actually, it is not wrong to say that "Chess is a waste of time". The problem is with the arguments made in the original post by the post author.
The people cited are people with very different alleged world views. You cannot take the people whose views often diametrically oppose to each other just to take their shared opinion about something and then conclude that this shared opinion is therefore "correct".
Elon Musk has many other crazy opinions and has made many unethical and just immoral statements. If you take his authority, then you have to first somehow show that what he thinks is a universally correct , which somehow enables him to have an opinion on the worth of chess. What do you think Elon Musk thinks about other opinions of Einstein, or about Buddhist teachings? Do you think he agrees with both of them?
If you want to take Einstein's opinion about chess, then also you have to then explicitly say what it is that makes Einstein an authority on chess or on how people are to spend time. His views on spirituality and religion, as far as I know, do not align with any world religions. I think he was by all indications an atheist. Maybe he has made a few statements about God and spirituality, but I don't think he even went to Synagogue most of his life. Also, as I asked about Elon Musk, do you think Einstein would agree with what Buddhists believe and do? Would he approve of meditating and chanting for hours and hours on daily basis?
Buddha? There are many problems with citing Buddha. First of all there is no authoritative text at all about what he has said, which is why there is no "Buddhist Bible". I am fully aware of the texts that are considered to be "accurate" collected teachings of Buddha. But there are many texts alleged to be his teachings that no Buddhists universally agree what "Buddhist" texts are authoritative and which statements are made up by the followers afterward.
A much bigger problem with quoting Buddha and taking his alleged authority on board games has to do with with what I mentioned earlier about the authority of people like Elon Musk or Einstein. If you are going to take The Buddha's alleged statement about playing a board game (which was not chess as it is known today as at the time of Buddha the chess as we know it now did not exist) then you have to take all other alleged teachings of the Buddha at their face value. Do you actually know what , in this case, Tibetan Buddhists, and many non-Tibetan Buddhists outside of the United States and Europe believe? Buddhist teachings actually literally say that Buddha levitated and threw fireballs. They also believe that the world in which we live is a flat disk with 4 continents and one big mountain in the center. I think also that its supported by elephants or something. They also believe in Astrology, which is absolutely debunked by standard scientific method.
Now, of course, I think in reality the Buddhists do NOT believe that the Earth is a round disk that is flat. They cannot argue with science that has proven the earth is a round planet in the center of a solar system. The issue is that there are Buddhists that DO believe that, and that it used to be a core belief of Tibetan Buddhists. I watched videos of people actually saying they believe this version of reality. THe issue is that you are picking and choosing which Buddhist text to believe and which to reject if you do not believe all of it.
That does not mean that chess is not a waste of time. But the argument from dubious authority is not a valid argument. There are actually more rational reasons why chess is a "waste of time" but they are a different discussion that I don't want to go into here.
Also the OP immediately suggests to us what manner of use of time is "useful". He says patronizingly: "So my dear pawn pushers, instead of wasting your time on a glorified board-game, why not meditate on the universe's wonders"
Do I really need to write another paragraph explaining the problems with that recommendation? Maybe the OP is not very familiar with the philosophers of the last 300-400 years. A number of them did exactly that and have not given us any answers they intended to find, but some have actually stated that we should not waste our time trying to think and try to answer universe's unanswerable questions.

I think I should agree chess is a waste of time. We all see that in Magnus Carlsen view. He wanted to change the chess rules so badly. The owner of the game from inventing classical chess to Bullet chess. It literally not even smart at all and no intelligence. It just the reflexes.
