lets say for example that you have a pawn on e5 and your opponent has a pawn on d7. If he plays d5 you can play exd5 and capture the pawn the same way you would have captured it if he had played d6
En Passant
If a pawn moves forward 2 squares, and ends up adjacent to an opponent's pawn, the opponent can capture it as if it had only moved 1 square. This is to stop one side being able to escape capture from a pawn by skipping the square the opponent's pawn attacks. It can only be done immediately after the pawn move, otherwise the right to capture en passant is lost.
