I come across it in about one out of 20 games or so. But I think I decline it as often as I accept it because my opponent has usually already calculated the consequences of my taking the pawn.
en passant
It's a legal pawn move in chess. Played when you're oponent has just moved his pawn forward two squares and you would of had the option to capture it if it had moved one. Rules for it here. It doesn't appear that often but it's worth knowing so you don't get surprised.
Thats interesting MSteen alot more often than me , i thought my 1 game in a 100 would be about average , you obviously come across more often than me .
Please people not really interested on general comments , just how often you come across en passant , just an approximate figure would be enough to satisfy my curiosity
I'm not sure how often I come across it, but it must be much less than 1 in 20 games. I would guess that 1 in 100 might be about right.
I would say 1 out of 20 is a good figure for me also. Playing lines like the advance french would give you more oppertunity to see this move.
What a pity, post 6, just a figure does not say enough ( btw only twice 1:20 and twice 1:100 so far); it depends on the opening systems used, in Spanish and Sicilian I guess far less en passant moves than apparently in the French, okay.
Declining or accepting is also important, I often wonder why my opponent does not take en passant, shouldn't he know that move ?
Speaking for myself : once in 200 games; and mostly I take the pawn, say in 80% ; my opponents do it 50/50 %.
OK, I'm wrong. I apologize. Looking at my past games, I realize that 1/20 is way overestimated. I can't tell you what the exact figure is because I have better things to do than go through the score of every game looking for it, but it's nowhere near 1/20. I guess I just pulled that out of my butt.
if u gotta pull something out of your butt that's the tapeworm

in my experience i would play around about 100 games , and only see this rare move once , just interested to know what other players think , how often they come across it , if at all .
