I would start by watching YouTube videos on basic endgames I think gothamches and hikaru both have videos on basic endgame patterns you can practice them after you watch the video with stockfish

EmelieBarbie

Thank you ok I will watch them. I just need to keep practicing as well I think.

I would love to find a mentor or someone who can teach me.

BigChessplayer665

That would be helpful but I actually just watched YouTube videos and got good on my own by playing way too much people actually have different rates of improvement (like in anything else ) so don't worry to much if you get stuck at like 800 elo or something

EmelieBarbie

Ok well I am not bothered about what rating I am just as long as I improve as I go further into this. I just feel I need extra but will start with the youtube videos thanks.

EmelieBarbie

I just watched youtube. played 2 games and lost them both this is really really frustrating I can't do it!

BigChessplayer665

You need practice first you won't be good instantly

EmelieBarbie

I know I guess so but really frustrating. I thought I was good at this game lol.

Hi.

I've just had a quick look at your last game. I don't think that the issue is necessarily end-game related - yes, you started well, but rather than poor end-game play generally being the reason for your loss it is more likely to do with blundering your queen on move 26 (and then one of your rooks on move 33). I say this with no judgment - I'm a beginner too and have done (and continue to do) my fair share of blundering! happy

I would focus on taking a little more time before each move in order to try to eliminate these blunders. Choose longer time controls if necessary. Just my 2p worth.

You should also learn how to win when down a piece cause you will hang your queen way too much <1800

EmelieBarbie

Thanks I agree I was so annoyed with myself for losing my queen as this got in my head I couldn't concentrate after losing her I feel you can't win without your Queen.

BigChessplayer665

I checkmated a 500 without a queen(and time odds of ten sec ) so it's possible

EmelieBarbie

Wow ok I didn't think it was possible thanks for teaching me that!!

Ensure your pieces work together. In the endgame, the coordination between your remaining pieces is crucial for converting advantages or defending inferior positions.

King-and-Pawns vs King-and-Pawns is the most important end-game to practice.

King-and-Rook-and-Pawns vs King-and-Rook-and-Pawns is the next most important.

Most of the stuff you need to know about endgames can be learned in those two types.

The book is short. Serious endgame study will involve far more than the few basics in Chess Fundamentals, although that book is an exceptional beginning on all aspects of your game.

Why are Pawns so important? and thank you!

In the end-game?

Because Pawns can promote to Queens.

In the opening and middle-game?

Because Pawns form the "terrain" of the chess board. The arrangement of Pawns determines whether you will be fighting in an open field, or in a jungle where both movement and sight are limited.

Those are all books on the endgame and represent about 1/3 of what I have on that phase of the game.

.
You, however, might have been thinking about checkmate patterns when you created this thread on the endgame. There are lots of books on that topic, too. These three are by far the best:

Yes, were you actually talking about endgames (with only a few pieces left on the board), or were you talking about checkmate patterns?

This is a typical checkmate pattern:
