engines and databases

I don't know how to use databases and engines. I was trying to prepare an opening and the engine just throws out moves and evaluation but it has no meaning to it. the database is the same. just throws out moves and percentages. I don't know which branch to see or why it is good or bad. is there some specific way to use engines and databases or should I just forget it for the moment.
