There are different definitions of etiquette. Mine is that checkmate is the end of the game and a player has a right to play on until they are checkmated if they so wish without being cursed at or insulted.

I will play a lost game as far as 'reasonable', because I can learn by fighting on as best I can and from watching how the player who beats me handles the attack.

If unable to extract myself from losing game I resign before it gets silly (from my view), and thank my oppenent for the good game.
