Etiquette

Hello, I'm very new at chess. I just started playing last month and am addicted (even though I'v got a LOT to learn and get beat a lot). Some here seem to get irritated when they have gained a significant advantage (with scant chance of me winning) and I continue to play. Confused about proper etiquette, I've started giving up a lot more easily lately, but feel like I'm giving up some valuable experience playing through and am reconsidering this for the future. So a couple of questions: 1) is there anything improper (in any circumstance) about playing through till the computer stops the game? If so are there any guidelines for when you should throw in the towel? 2) is there anything improper about repeatedly avoiding check mate when at a significant disadvantage just to win on time? just want to make sure Im behaving properly. Thanks for any input.

Don't resign until you believe you're both a) lost, and b) not going to learn anything from continuing.

Play all the way to mate. You'll learn how to do mates, take an advantage to a win, defend your position, and most of all, play all the way to checkmate because people have to prove that they can do that at your level. Many can't. Many make mistakes. Any reasonable person would know when playing a player at your level, they must be able to mate you.Wink

You should play through to the bitter end if you believe your time would not be more productively spent working on a fresh game.

The only exception I can think of would be when I'm your opponent as the instant White's played the 4th move (the point where the game becomes 'official'), I welcome resignations by my opponents.

But I'll not resort to taunting my opponent with urgings to 'give up already', no matter how far ahead I am in the game.

Etiquette becomes more important as your rating climbs.

At this point perhaps when you are playing and you know you have been out played and probably will lose you can advise your opponent you will play all the way to gain experience. If your opponent asks you to resign then just resign and go to the next game. Normally you want to resign when you know there is no way to win.

Ha! If someone asks me to resign, I'll tell them to jump in a lake.

The message was not meant for you. I already knew that.

Thanks for stating the obvious (that you already knew that).

I only play 10 min games at this point so there is little time for that, all my games play to the bitter end. Anyone who resigns in my games does so without being asked. Including me.

But there is nothing wrong with resigning when you have lost it already.

Weren't we talking about whether you resign, when asked?

Since I only play 10 min games there is little time for that. No one has ever asked me to resign in a 10 min game. But if they did I would give it serious consideration- if all were lost and no point in going on , yes I would resign.

well in this case I agree with the people who say play on so you can learn as much as possible from each game. In my case I'm just a very average player ( in the 1000 to 1100 rating group ) and what I find quite funny is the number of players in the same group who cannot mate me if I only have my King and they only have a Queen to go with their King. Therefore I often make them chase me and more often than not I get a draw and thus avoid a loss. So make them proof that they can force a checkmate and you may get a few extra draws that way as well.

I've had a few occasions in live chess where my opponent left me to wait 15+ mins on time instead of being checkmated/resigning.

I'd say play on in most cases if you are learning from it.

Pawn promotion is so much fun. You can even make bishops share a color.

One should enjoy games against non-beginners who do not resign by promoting as many Queens as one can. Is it not an enjoyable sight to see 4 queens on the chessboard? How about 5 queens. In fact it is quite a challenge to have as many queens on the chessboard without stalemating the opponent or without losing on time.

So, when an opponent does not resign a hopelessly lost game, enjoy the sight of as many queens on the chessboard and then and only then go for checkmate. Here's a sample:

Isn't that an illegal position? (Assuming the Queen came from f6 as colored)

I don't think so, because the White King could have moved from check.

Proofgames are more convincing :P

When your opponent should resign blitz, but does not, is it bad form to chant the name of your country (or country represented by your opening) triumphantly in chat? I think sometimes my enthusiasm outweighs proper etiquette. But I am so overcome by the thrill of an impending victory. Plus they can turn chat off. What do you guys think? :D
