Evaluating an attack

I'm getting better at finding combinations, but I sometimes miscalculate my lead and that results in blunders.

I often find myself settling for less than I should in a tactic, and focusing too much on material, rather than looking for a mate in a shaky position for my opponent.

Any generalities I can use in my evaluation?

You need to calculate the position.  Not all positions have an attack, and that is when you need to know what to do.
