I won't sacrifice pieces or position for it but I too will attempt to exchange queens.

Its a good Idea when:

Your ahead

or you are tied and are really good at end game.

Beginners (a.k.a weak players) exchange just because they can. Intermediate (>1200) all the way up to Super Grandmasters only go out of their way when they gain something from it, or when not doing so will give them a disadvantage.

If you want to get better, don't play lazy chess and just exchange for the hell of it. Find small dynamic changes that will happen when the exchange happens and determine if these are favorable to you.

Say you're playing an opponent (you have White pieces) and his Queen is on c5. His dark squared Bishop is undeveloped on f8. This is probably not good for you, because when you take his Queen, he will recapture and simultaneously develop his Bishop, gaining time and possibly initiative (attacking chances).

As a general rule though, exchanging Queens by itself makes the game more drawish. If it affects nothing else in the position, it is recommended only when your opponent's Queen is threatening something very dangerous.

I think like almost everything in chess it depends on the position
