Experience dominates books

I argue that playing more is more beneficial then opening a book.  Play and learn is my advice to beginners like myself.

Play, and open books, is my advice, it's not like every book in your house catches on fire when you play a game. Or vice versa.

Books certainly help you interpret what happens on the board, and there is certainly no reason why you can't both practice, and read up.
