Happens to me all the time. I wouldn't face king's gambit for months, then suddenly there will 3 players playing king's gambit on the same day. Same with many other openings. If I play e4 openings with white, most of my other opponents play e4 with white as well. A few days later, when I start playing d4 with white, my opponents on other matches start playing d4 opening with white as well. This has happened so many times. This can't possibly be a normal trend.
Does this happen to anyone else? What i mean by the title, is that i can go a month without seeing various opening variations and then play 2-3 players with the same opening back-to-back. It's always seemed an interesting coincidence, but it happens again and again. Anyone else have similar experiences?
Take this morning for example, playing as black with the Pirc i played two players who had the same opening - an opening that i have never seen before, despite playing the past year with the Pirc. The opening also has hardly ever been played according to the opening explorer.
Last week i played two players in the Sicilian Drazic variation. Which again, was a first.
Same thing happens with other openings. Randomly facing two players both running the Steinitz version of the Scotch (4..Qh4!?), which isn't exactly rare but seems odd when you dont face it in ~50 games.
The classical line in the Nimzo (4.Qc2) isn't played much at the ~1700 level, and the only time ive faced it was three times in the same day.
