"Fair play" warning

Sort:

Lately I've been getting a warning that my account will be suspended if I don't adhere to the fair play policy etc. I have been adhering to the policy but I get lag sometimes and get disconnected due to bad network. I'm not disconnecting or taking long to move on purpose. How do I get rid of this warning when the connection is above my control ?

you stop playing live chess and start playing daily chess . thats the only solution .

There's a haven for laggers at [Do not advertise other chess sites - Mod.]. You'll never have problems or face criticism there when you use 4-5 minutes (including your lag) in a three minute game. Otherwise, as web14 notes, you should switch to correspondence chess where lag has no effect.

Don't lie, Judit.  We know you're using a lag switch.  V3 can detect that, so say goodbye to all of those games won on time.

I don't even know what lag switch is. seems I'm better off on another chess site

BronsteinPawn

Yep. Almost any other chess site will do the trick for you.

I like France.

Don't pay any attention to people like that. They are just trying to get you mad.

Unfortunately, if you are connecting to Chess.com from around the world, lag is a fact of life.  It's not Chess.com's fault, your signal has to make multiple hops around the world to get to chess.com for each and every move you make and receive. It's a miracle that it works at all.

I think that a lot of people from countries experiencing a lot of lag (like India) typically play rapid chess games (10 minutes plus) to allow them the chance to reconnect multiple times in a game. If you want to play five minute chess, you have to reconnect very quickly to avoid losing the game on a time forfeit. Using a phone or other wireless connection to play is asking for trouble.

I do see a number of less than 10 move game losses in your archive. Do you completely lose your connection to the entire internet for several minutes?

I don't know what kind of typical connection delays people get from South Africa. Perhaps you could join a South African group and see if they have any hints. Perhaps one internet service is better than another.

What likely happened is that you had a brief disconnect and the server may not have received your move.

The server is the keeper of the accurate time. With the lag compensation algorithms the times on the clients may not be accurate. That is why you may occasionally see clocks adjusted in games, even without increments.

Since no one else is asking, what is a lag switch?

Thats actually a pretty complex thing to do

Outertale

Two solutions:

1)  Tell Chess.com about this

2) Get a better network

DalaiLuke

I've lived in many places that had bad internet.  The solution is to not play 3-min games with bad internet.  Kinda simple.

Outertale

True dat.

Don't worry about the message. It's just there to advise people not to disconnect intentionally. Your play only gets restricted if it happens a lot. If you are not doing it intentionally, it's probably not happening often, and you are fine.

Hey, this guy is impersonating the site owner!

My fake website name gets deleted by a mod and this religious nonsense gets to stay? I'm hurt by the unfairness.

Most people are religious and the most popular religion is Christianity. It's certainly embarrassing, but that's reality. Maybe it makes sense to allow comments like this (even though it may currently be against a strict interpretation of the ToS).

You need to drop your narrow American provincialism. This site is global. Christianity is not the world's leading religion. Building even a logical argument from a false premise produces error. But in this case, your argument for popularity over law falters as well.

I honestly thought Christianity was the leading religion. (Quick google and wiki.) Yeah, it says it is. If this is wrong though I'm open to being corrected.

This site is global? Absolutely. Does it make sense to restrict contentious topics? Absolutely. On a personal level do I want to see this kind of thing? No. In fact I tend to find it insulting / embarrassing to our species.

That aside, it is what it is. Billions believe it. I'm not sure making the topic taboo is beyond questioning, and that's all I'm experimenting with here, using the forum as a sounding board. Why not allow these sorts of comments?

You had to worship Stalin in the USSR, not god.
