This sounds really stupid but are the people with gms next to their names on this site the "real thing" or are they people who have really high ratings that are just role-playing their favorite GM. I think it's more the former but please enlighten my ignorance. thanks!

Sometimes people copy the words and use it as their avatar - those are fake titles. It also doesn't mean anything if they include it in their username; it has to be the separate letters next to their name but separate from their avatar picture.

I am a Grandmaster in real life but I'm waiting on my application result for my title to appear on this site.

He might be a Grandmaster at stamp collecting, or at tiddley-winks.
