It is as simple as this

my standard rating is 1400

my rapid and blitz are 1000

I spend a ton of time planning out my moves

Occassionaly somebody substantially lower rated than me will rip me apart. It happens. I've lost to players 400 points lower. If you play enough games it will happen from time to time.

I think your name says it all ; )

im pretty sure quite a few players fake thier rating to win others...

Occum's razor says you played below your rating or he is under rated.

I was wondering when this would come up. but fyi if Occum's razor is speaking to you, you might habe bigger problems.

Please explain how I have "bigger problems" by pointing out that the simplest explaination is most often the correct one?

tooTal, don't expect anything intelligent from that nutbar ...

today while i was observing an under 1200 rated game i came across a player who had the rating of 550, he won all his games against players with rating of between 1000 to 1199. he himself told me that he was a 1400 rated player, this is not at all fair to the honest rated players playing in the tournament.
i was just observing and i got upset to no limit, if i were playing i would be devastated. Something has to be done about these sandbaggers !!!

NATHANKRISHNA

Agree with Alessandro170..I lost 3 games to below 1400 players..but

they never went up in rating after that hardly any progress..later..

so assume some relative or family friend helped to win..

He used to be 1400 but that time he was lower. Nothing is wrong with that. I was higher than 1500 and lower than 1200 during short period of time. My play depends on my physical form very much. Do you think i'm a sandbagger? Maybe i would have won a tournament if i had tried to take part in it when i was lower rated.

Don't be disuaded by the forum trolls and ne'rr do wells who want to bring you down, belittle you or make you seem wrong.  They are obviously miserable sociopaths who just want to bully someone because of their small.... egos. There are also people of the variety who insist that, if something doesn't always happen, it never happens, as if they have a healthy dose of rational skepticism, when of course it does happen, and their 'skepticism' is religion.

Word on the street here is there are people who slum in ELO to mop up.  Maybe not a lot, but it happens. I've seen players come along under 1000 who give me more challenging games than let's say a typical 1300+ would. Their moves are consistently more tactically advanced than I get from most players at my ELO, for example, or at least as good.  Actually though, they may not really be slumming, but just hold a temporarily low rank from playing tired or messed up or carelessly for awhile, or, for whatever reason, and sank in their ratings. Who knows?

One thing to keep in mind is, they cannot remain at their low rating if they keep winning, so they have to throw plenty of games away if they're really any good, to keep slumming.

And finally, one of the reasons some people are low-rated is that they are impulsive, reckless, aggressive, unfocused, self-destructive, can't concentrate for a full game, or just can't handle the pressure. They may know a lot of techniques and understand the game but lack the consistency or discipline to bring it all together into a steady rating or climbing trajectory.  They may be the kind of player who can concentrate for only a portion of a game but frequently does themselves in with a blunder or two that wrecks an otherwise excellent game.

great comment Knightly ! Your last 2 sentences made me chuckle because they describe my play almost perfectly !

My Live Chess ratings however do not fluctuate more than 200 points up or down, even with my reckless play at times. It's pretty clear and pretty easy to spot a sandbagger, as I have pointed out many times in this forum. It's also funny as you said how some people just refuse to believe it or accept it. Or maybe they are just playing the devils advocate.

At any rate, it is good to see some intelligent thoughts laid down here !

I did once upon a time have a chess.com acount with a 101 rating but I think I was 300 stg xD.

I'm joking of course :)

So if you flactuate only 200 points then anyone who does more is a sandbagger? Yes, sometimes i'm impulsive and lose many games in a row. It's like chain reaction which is caused by lack of confidence. The more games i lose the more confidence i lose. The more confidence i lose the more games i lose. When i hit bottom i start winning and gain my confidence back. And now i go up and up. It can be a see-saw between 400 points. Additional factor is difference in physical form. But i think flactuate more than 400 points is not simple for me because in that case i really need to lose on purpose.

acountisasgoodasclos

I went from 2150 (about 6 mounths) on this site on bullet to 2316 in like one day am I a sandbagger? X(

slimcheffy

no Julian, you are a smartypants as far as I can tell, and I don't think you are FAKING it.

VibrantMoves

Is it so difficult to check the games archive of the member to see if he's sandbagging or not? A 500-800 rated member winning an under 1500 rated tournament is definitely a sandbagger. How can you justify it?

acountisasgoodasclos

@slimcheffy I'm not sure to say thank you?, or ask you I'm not sure to say thank you?

I once spent an evening showing a beginner friend of mine some of the classical games from the past. Games of Anderson, Morphy, etc. He was amazed by the beauty of these games.

He asked "Can you play like that??" He then challenged me to get on Chess.com, challenge players <1000, (much lower than I usually play,) give away my queen in the opening "Scott free," and try to still win.

I played about a dozen games. I couldn't get anybody to take my bloody queen. No matter how hard I tried to sac it. Or how obvious I made it it was hanging.

Then I started thinking "These folks may be trying to lose on purpose...."

@KillTheHorsie

People may try sandbagging in large tournaments in order to win money as well as gain back their sandbagged rating.

That is not only unethical. If it is done for money, it is illegal. Is known as Sweepstakes Fraud.
