There are 9.3 million blitz players. You are higher rated than more than 8.3 million of them.
That's what I feel as well. Need to spend lot of time for this. I'm in my early 30s. If I was a kid in teens or 20s, I would have spent more time. I think most GMs have been playing chess their whole life.
Chess.com has alot a extremely good players in the blitz and bullet pools. Much more competetive then the rapid rating pool. To give you an idea, 2000 rated lichess blitz players would probably barely be able to keep a 1600 rating on this site. It took me years to get to around 1800 blitz level, it's not easy unless you're a child who learns fast
I've been focusing only on Blitz these days. Currently, I'm at my best elo rating ever on Chess.com but I still feel bad and my pace of improvement is slow. My rating is around 1200 on chess.com and I feel it difficult to maintain the rating or get to 1300 and I'm focusing only on Blitz. I've got to elo ratings of 1500 to 1600 on other platforms like lichess.
Is Chess.com really competitive especially the Blitz section? My percentile shows I'm better than 83% of total participants. Then why is my rating still 1200? Something seems wrong.
A couple points:
1) if you are looking to improve at chess, do not play blitz. If you are looking to improve at blitz, continue on.
2) You cannot compare ratings from other sites. Not only is the rating only in relation to a given player pool, LiChess (for example) also set their system up so that the average rating should be roughly 1500. Chess.com had originally set theirs up to be roughly 1200, but it has been skewed by allowing players to select their skill level for their initial rating. So the average is now closer to 900, making a player with a 1200 rating join the 80+ percentile.
Finally, why care about your online rating? If you are getting better, your rating will catch up. If you are just trying to pump up your rating without getting better, eventually it will fall (or you will have to stop playing to keep it where it is).
I'm not contradicting you deliberately but only because up until January I was playing nothing but Daily3day and Chess960. I decided to give them up for a year or so and play nothing but blitz because I thought it would improve my game. I think my judgement was a good one.
Bear in mind that the things a 1800+ needs to do to improve is not the same as <=1200.
OK. Point taken. My own idea was that I'd been playing 3-day for so long, without playing blitz, that I'd actually lost my nerve. I was developing a compulsion to over-analyse everything, accompanied by a sense of unreality when playing blitz. It's taken about 500 - 1000 games to even dent that problem but I'm feeling better now and much more confident. It was hard to believe I was once an extremely strong 5 minute blitz player.
I had a similar problem in reverse. I was a reasonably strong blitz player (got to ~1850 on here mostly in 3+0 games), but when I started playing OTB I quickly found out that 1) my time management sucked for long games, and 2) the tricks that worked in 3+0 did not work at all when my opponent had 60 minutes. I basically had to break those habits to get better at chess, and now I am a fairly bad blitz player (often losing on time from completely winning positions).
