Fianchetto Systems are refuted ?
No, none of these systems are refuted. Opening systems go in and out of fashion, and today's ugly ducklings will become tomorrow's swans
The King's Gambit was popular in Morphy's time.
Why in the very highest level famous fianchetto openings like King's Indian, Benoni or Sicilian Dragon have not been seen at regular intervals ? Have systems like Samisch or Taimanov or Yugoslav refuted the Indian legacy completely.........?
Refuted? No. They're still sound. A lot depends on the opponents and who wants to play what. But the fianchetto systems are still being played and still scoring fine.
Benoni: Caruana mentioned that he's usually eager to play the Benoni against the other elite players, but said that white players often choose to avoid it. Also, Wesley So played it against Ding Liren last week.
Dragon: Nakamura still plays the Dragon frequently (he played it just a few weeks ago against Nepomniachtchi, and a few weeks before that against Kramnik).
King's Indian Defense: Hikaru played it against Caruana about a month ago. Carlsen played it against Giri a few weeks before that.
All of them are fine, and you should not bother at all what the top GM's play.
But you gotta act the part if you wanna be GM
Many GM use king's indian as their main weapons on 1.d4.
Pirc/Modern and KID are not at all refuted. They are just risky and need more preparation and accurate play, more energy.
