Comments section.

To be fair, FIDE did not predict the coronavirus. So everyone (in the comments) is making their opinion based on hindsight. Let's put this issue to rest, and try to make the whole situation better happy.png

But also to be fair, because FIDE failed to take the threat of the coronavirus seriously, they put themselves in their own mess.

Not wrong, Advaith. To be fair, Coronavirus just messed a lot of things up, and no one was or is perfect in this situation happy.png

True. I'm sure FIDE had the reasons for going about the tournament, but in my opinion, all factors considered, it was not the right one. Oh well, people do make mistakes.

I think FIDE made a series of good choices. They started a tournament in controlled conditions they new were safe (unlike manybwork and sports events then and now). They could have finished the tournament but didn't for the better good of the players. Russia closing it's borders wouldn't make the chess unplayable. It would have just been awkward.

FIDE made a series of sensible decisions taking into account player safety. They even went out of there way to ensure there safety (they could have just continued and tried to negotiate with the Russian government) even though it made people who didn't evaluate the rational situation.

Covid is a major risk. A lot of people made poor choices early on and many are still making them to this day. But FIDE took Covid seriously and took minimal risks while ensuring maximal gain.
