I give up. How many?

btw...you wouldn't consider 10,000,000 on this website alone, multiplied by all the other chess websites (subtracting duplicates, of course) as bringing chess to the masses?

Too, it is readily available for almost everybody on the planet, whereas FIDE is not.

Have you gone mad?

readily available doesn't mean that everyone is using it. chess is still just as much of an anonmaly in most corners of the world. the only thing all these chess sites have done is made it easier for those of us who like chess. but i would say in the last 30-40 years the increase in amount of players has been marginal.

"readily available doesn't mean that everyone is using it."

I suspect what you meant to say is: Just because everybody is not using it doesn't mean it isn't readily available.

I'd buy you a beer but see that you've already had several. Smile

wow. that is some backwards logic. ok, let's put this in terms you can understand. what do most uneducated hicks relate to? guns or beer? ok, guns, guns are readily available at your corner store. that does not mean that you are going to go and buy one or even know how to use it for that matter. you might not be the slightest bit interested in guns. but there they are, readily available for you at your neighborhood thrifty's

You are still talking nonsense.

I agree with this thread, I spent all day the first day trying to find a link to live coverage on google.  FIDE is nowhere near the first page, the main results are chessdom.  On chessdom it has a link to "live coverage" which you click on and it takes you back to the main Anand-Carlsen page without live coverage.  I spent about an hour there going back and forth trying to figure out what was happening.

Finally I came to chess.com, they kept spamming links for 24chess.com in the chat, so I went there, and that live coverage wouldn't load, it just kept loading forever.  So I figured there was no live coverage and I missed the entire first day.

Then I just thought to go to the FIDE website, even there there is no link to live coverage of the event, there's a seperate website 2014sochi website which I have no idea how anybody is supposed to find on google.  Somehow I got from the FIDE website to that website after searching all around.

Maybe I'm stupid, maybe I'm not, but I'm sure I'm not the only person who had this problem and that is a HUGE failure by FIDE when it should be the first result on google so any casual fan can easily find it.  For as much as they want to promote chess, they completely fail in these very basic ways.  Even a chess lover like me took until the second day to find it, I can't imagine how somebody who isn't obsessed with chess would find this match.  There's literally no link to the correct site after searching on google for 2014 world chess championship live coverage.

I've had trouble finding decent coverage of this event also. Had no problem with the candidates, which is bizarre because for this they only have to cover ONE GAME at a time.

I had no problem with the candidates, no problems with the Norway tournament earlier in the year, and had no problems with last years WCC.  This one has been a disaster.

The name Sochi 2014 was already taken for the Winter Olympics, so it was really stupid to take the same name for the WCC 2014. The webpage design is also very poorly done and not user friendly. The choice of cameras, chess pieces and colours are ok, but the co-anchors do not mesh. The IM is too passive to be co-anchor. Also, at the end of the game each day, the co-anchors say good bye see you tomorrow, but they do not alert the viewers to stay tune for the press conference. And last but not least, one should be able to see a recording of the press conference at a later date.

But at least FIDE is consistant....they remain inefficient all the time.

Recording of press conferences is present at sochi2014.fide website.

I won't say anything about Fide to affect your opinion, just take a look at their homepage and make your judgement about the promotion regarding the Title Match.

The annotation during the games is very good, but I initially thought that they were supposed to cooperate on this. This would help Peter avoiding all these "you know, you know".

What can I say about the press conference while the participants don't say anything about it? But I had to expect that chess players are not verbose and express themselves tersely.

FIDE doesn't decide where they're placed in major search engines. If they wanted to promote themselves to go up, they would have to do advertisement, perform search engine optimization, etc.

I have no problem with them not being on top. I'd rather have FIDE invest into chess-related things than pour money into useless SEO competition with chess coverage sites or Wikipedia.

It's not useless when it's the only way most fans will find their product.  For a high level organization it's literally inexcusable when the money involved isn't even that much.  It's a matter of getting your name out there, being more prominent, there's no excuse for the most prominent chess organization in the world not to come up in a search for their very own world championship.

I have been watching the "board" broadcast with commentary on chess24.com, which has been fine. My question is if there is actual live video of the players and the *actual* match anywhere ? Or is that precluded by some silly rule ? While I definitely would not like to lose the software representation of the game, which definitely enhances visualization of the position, and allows for analysis of potential lines, I think it would be very interesting to watch the players in real-time, as the game is being played.

Does anyone know if this is available ? Thanks

Inyustisia

its available at the official stream, http://www.sochi2014.fide.com/live-video/

The live feed on the FIDE website is appalling - seems to freeze for me after 20 seconds and if I try and reload it does the same.  Is anyone else getting this?

These should be routine actions.

I have not been able to hear Svidler and Guranishvili since they were discussing 33.g4! (game 4).

The moves of the game are broadcasting okay.

I had a very hard time getting the stream to start early on, it finally worked after about 10 minutes into the match, probably around move 7 or 8, I don't remember exactly.

Then somewhere around the time Anand got his white squared bishop to the center of the board (I guess around move 25 or so) it stopped working and would not work for me for a good 30 minutes.

Finally got it back just before they traded the dark squared bishop.  I don't know if it's just me but the stability of the stream was terrible.  Never had these problems with the candidates or with last year's WCC.
