Carlsen? THAT WOODPUSHER?

Avatar of catlover123456

Seriously,

With every era there are reams of new analysis for gms benefit. In his era Fischer was the best. Today, of course. Carlsen is but he is not as sharp on the attack as Fisher was - see his book 60 memorable games - Fischer was a very bold player. Carlsen is great but more conservative.

Fischer?? He got the WC title and quit playing...in the top 100 I'd say...

Fischer was cooler than Carlsen

Avatar of calculation2

He was fun and show man but not consciously...

yes that seems to be true!

That was far too rational. However I'd disagree as Fischer wasn't able to take the championship until he was 30, give or take. So by that measure Carlsen is a good 8 years AHEAD of Fischer.

Fischer was the best player in the world by 1962 (Stockholm Interzonal).  He was denied the title by Soviet collusion.  Ex-Soviets have admitted to the collusion.

Your metric is ridiculous and ignores history.

Fischer blanked Taimonov, and Bent Larson 6 to 0...then smashed Petrosian before beatin spassky fort the title. To go 6 to 0 against a grandmaster is almost unheard of..but to do it twice, is equivalent to throwing back to back no hitters in baseball. Nearly impossible!! HE also won 20 straight games against the top grandmasters something else almost unheard of. No way Kasparov, Carlson or any other chess player have done anything close to that. Be Honest, put the feelings aside and think about that for a second. 6 to 0..no draws no losses...6 straight. Then turn around and do it again...PHENOMENAl and this is before fritz and computers, whoudini all of that..

Carlsen, because Fischer would be too busy crying over the color of the tablecloths.

Still a triple no on those three...

If winning an Interzonal makes you the best player in the world Mecking and Gelfand have been that several times. However, winning Candidates or title matches is something else. No amount of wishful thinking can make Fischer the best player in the Candidates 1962, and none of the players obviously ever admitted to collusion.

The existence of chess engines and databases by no means make it easier to score such results, rather the opposite.

Read the book: "Russians Versus Fischer" by Dmitry Plisetsky and Voronkov

In 1962, there was but one Interzonal, and after Fischer win by a huge margin, the Russians became apoplectic.

Fischer = strongest player in the world, 1962 to 1972, and beyond.

Fischer of course!...and it's not a matter only of who is better player. I doubt that Carlsen will ever contribute to chess the same as Fischer did. Now days chess top ten players do only one think : They share the prize money from the several tournaments. Yes Carlsen is a better money collector while Fischer a fool romantic who denied the 5$ milion from the 1975 match. Wow! How beautiful the marketing and business entered the chess world! Instead of watching the moves and games played by players we see the statistics of how much money they earned from the Grand chess tour.

And guess who is responsible for all this? Oh Yes! The no Fischer told to Karpov changed the history of chess professionalism. Every dollar Carlsen make for a living it owes it to Fischer.

Just imagine how much money Carlsen would make if also Steinitz, Karpov, Kasparov etc had quit playing in their 20s and never dared to defend the title :-)

According to the Worldwide Church of Fischer the ten commandments are:

1. It was FIDE that took chess away from Fischer, who wanted to keep playing

2. Fischer was the best player in the world from at least 1962

3. Fischer was the best player in the world up until at least the 1990s

4. Fischer would have won the 1962 Candidates very easily if not for Russian collusion

5. Karpov was afraid of playing Fischer and did all in his power to stop the match

6. Fischer's title match demands would have made competition fairer

7. Fischer never had any sort of mental problems, he was just eccentric

8. Fischer would have had a much higher rating if there were computers back then

9. Fischer was the nice guy, Soviets like Spassky, Keres and Tal the bad guys

10. Fischer stayed World Champion until he died
