Do you know Fischer Random Chess?
Also named Chess960.
I think it is the future of chess!

i have never heard of this, what is it?
StacyBearden
That sounds very cool.

thanks for the explanation :) it sounds very intreguing - adds a bit of spice to an already complex game! is castling really possible in a game like chess 960 though?

I have a hard enough time with normal chess, don't go confusing me even more.

ya lets have someone master chess before we create a new kind of chess(no one will ever master chess however so that is not a problem).

For us (amateurs players) is better to continue in normal chess than chess960, but for masters , chess960 is a good option, because they can memorize around 25 intial best moves in normal chess, it can explains the big number of draws among them.

I like the idea of placing the pieces in a different arrangement but some of the schemes for doing so seem too contrived. I'll stick to the original.

I think it'd be great if chess.com offered fischer random...I came across this post looking for it. No one gets a little tired thinking of how they have to study chess openings? The draw for me is quite obvious. It might be going out on a limb, but I think it puts the artistry back into chess.

Yeah you can castle. You can play this variant on FICS, ICC etc. Its not that popular. Your strength will be similar to your chess strength, since all of the normal principles apply.

If you would like to experiment with chess variants, I would recommend - bughouse, crazyhouse and atomic over FRC because these are more different and a lot of fun. I heard of a  server that hosts "gothic chess" with 2 extra pieces and a 10x10 board too.

Is that really true? If so, Fischer's whole reason for creating the 960 variant is null and void. He felt that too many people rely on memorization of openings, and that only the truly talented would stand out in his version.

Yeah, its really tough but I find it more fun than regular chess. My only problem is that seldom do I get response to my seeks on FICS. Usually people like to play blitz of 5 minutes or less,  but I find 20 minute games more fun. Openings are very hard and require you to think a lot more. There was one guy on there that was really good and he showed me a ton, like that it is very easy to get trapped. But yes, the normal play will fall to your familiar instincts, you just don't need to study lines, just be able to recognize general patterns. I think that Fisher's reason stands. I'm sure there are still some good opening principles, just more of them because certain setups can put you at a huge disadvantage if you don't know what you are doing.

I also think that chess 480 makes a little bit more sense, but it is less accepted. It is just a difference in castling rules. In chess 960 castling puts you in the exact same position as in regular chess. In 480, the king always moves 2 spaces and the opposite rook gets placed right next to your king on the opposite side it was facing (also just like regular chess but perhaps it is not thought of in this way).  This castling rule means that mirror random chess positions are identical in strategy, just reversed. So in the end you really only have 480 different strategical positions.

Also I might add that there are a few restrictions for the initial position. (i might be wrong because this is off of the top of my head and I am very tired). The first is that the bishops must still be on opposite colored squares. Secondly rooks must be on either side of the king. So the king cannot be in the corner. I'm not sure if there is a rule for the Queen...... let me check real quick on the interwebs.... No theres not...

But yeah thats it and it is suprisingly fun and easy to get into.

I do know a bit about the setup principles, and I think you hit all the main points. A few guides exist for setting up the board without the help of a computerized random number generator.
