I think Karpov would have won, and if he didn't, he would have learned Fischer's game enough to destroy him the next time they played. But, I have no doubt Fischer was quite worried about Karpov.
Fischer was afraid of Karpov?

In my opinion Bobby quailed not wanting to face the karpov, it was fear, this is the truth. he would be massacred, as the vast superiority of the Soviet chess elite, hadprepared to humiliate the young karpov Bobby Fischer. conclude that they were: toanalyze in their home matches of the young karpov "bobbynho" felt that he would beunbeatable, shivering in the bases and giving up chess for good.
If he was so afraid of Soviet chess, then why did he play Spassky for the world Champion, and after resigning his title to Karpov... and he didn't give up chess for good, he stopped playing FIDE matches, and was promoting Fischer Random Chess (960 for those who don't know the real name).

I dont think Fischer was afraid of Karpov but I think he was fed up with FIDE . He thought that after he won the WC then FIDE would listen to him and favor him as they had previous champions. When he saw they were not going to do this he just decided he would rather not play anymore than put up with all their shit....
davidegpc your opinion of communism is irelevant. also your ability to hold an open debate without resorting to insults seems to indicate certain character flaws. if people wish to speculate that is up to them. you dont have to agree just accept others have different opinions. but i doubt that someone who doesn't know anything about manners can understand.

Karpov > Fischer
If this were true I have to wnder why Karpov's best rating never topped Fischer's best ?
There are 2 kinds of topics here on chess.com
1. Would Fischer beat Kasparov(Karpov)?
2. d4 vs e4
Tired of it, sigh..
It is impossible to say who would have won. However if I had to guess what the results would be in 100 games Fischer vs Karpov I would guess at least 80 would be draws and who knows about the remainder.

I recall an article on the site a few months ago that argued that Fischer was frightened of Karpov. There are two levels to this, I think. One is that Fischer noted Karpov's superiority to the generation of Soviet players whom Fischer had beaten too; this we could call a 'rational' fear. The other side to it is the explanation based on Fischer having a neurotic fear of losing which prevented him from defending, ie risking, his title. This would be an irrational fear. Maybe the two combined, to everyone's loss. RIP Bobby Fischer - he really was his own worst enemy.

If Fischer had those higher rateds to play , as Karpov did, I have no doubt he would have easily broken 2800. He was already 2780 when the closest to him was Spassky some 100+ points behind. If Fischer had continued playing I dont believe anyone would believe he wouldnt gain another 50 to 100 elo points....

Well, as always in this debate, it comes down to opinion.
That's why these threads should get into even more fantasizing! Like, would Fischer allow cameras in a match against Karpov? What flavour yogurt would Karpov eat in their match? Would the Soviets only allow Russian-Jews in the audience? If Fischer lost, would he cry on national television? Get these threads more lively!

I believe Bobby Fischer always suffered from a tremendous fear of failure. So in that respect, he was fearful of Karpov. Add to this that Fischer had almost completely withdrawn from world class competition after his victory over Spassky. He knew he was rusty when the Karpov challenge loomed and this compunded his insecurity.
All that said, I believe that had Fischer played he would have beaten Karpov.
It was Kasparov, who ultimately would have dethroned Bobby, the chess genius/crackpot.

Interesting how , so far, only Americans think Fischer would have won.
Against ? and when ? In 1975 most chess people believed Fischer would beat Karpov , even Karpov himself. In 78 Karpov's chances would be more realistic....

Karpov > Fischer

Because Fischer chose opponents that he was likely to win against, whilst Karpov played against anyone.
In all the Fischer threads out there, you would think someone would actually talk about his specific games and not whether he was afraid/could have beaten soandso.

Not only untrue, but IMPOSSIBLE. Did he choose Spassky?
I don't think Fischer was afraid of Karpov or anyone else. And as good as Karpov was/is, he was NOT ready for Fischer back then. Fischer's problem was Fischer and wanting his way. People can say what they want, but from 1970 through the WCC, Fischer was completely beyond any other chess player alive. He could have beaten anyone.
