Food/Drink at the chessboard ?

Some people like to bring food and/or drink to the chessboard even in otb rated games. What do you think of this? Is it within the rules of FIDE and/or USCF ? Should it be allowed and if so, should there be limits?

Unlike the reply above, some things should only have one answer. In this case, No is the answer.

Ask yourself this question:

1. Am i really that busy not to respect my opponent and eat well ahead of my match? Why is this disrespecting your opponent? Because chess tournaments are a serious endeavour for a lot of players. They treat this activity as a form of business.

2. Would you eat in a board room if you were conducting business with your potential business partner?

It all boils down to etiquette. Take my advise, eat before you sit down and you will be more respected.

Years ago, I was playing a kid in a league game who insisted on eating boiled sweets throughout, loudly rustling the papers as he did so. After requesting him to stop it several times (as in STOP IT!!) to no avail, I did the only decent thing and bought myself a nice fat cigar, most of which he smoked! Touche.

I dont know about league rules but FIDE rules doesnt allow you to do anything that disturbs your opponent, so you could have complained and perhaps then something would be done. This does not always work however as once I complained to the arbiter that my opponent kept making very strong moves and it was disturbing me!  Nothing was done however. Wink

I don't know if it is allowed, but I don't think I would. It just seems like a matter of common manners to me.

well...when i'm in front of my pc or playing with my friends i sometimes eat, but in a competition i don't think this should be allowed

I really don't see anything with keeping a glass of water next to you.  Your throat can get dry over a long game.  However food seems unacceptable.

Will you be drinking the water or will it just sit next to you? Just kidding. I think you are correct. Drinks should be allowed. But food.....no way.

My chess couch says that if you ever have an official game that you really want to win, bring some digestive biscuits to the table and chew really loadly. Crumbs on the board are a bonus in his opinion. :)

That being said, I'm completely with you lot; a bottle of water is acceptable but anything else should be banned.

there used to be an issue with smoking(not an issue anymore-not allowed) because it was distracting  and destroyed the concentration of the opponent. i believe the same could be said about eating and/or drinking. since a lot of chess is psyching the opponent out,i believe there should be no potential for distraction when playing otb(unless it is non-rated). just my opinion, i am not sure of the official rules.

Pauldave: business is often discussed over lunch, though in a board room it would be inappropriate to eat or even drink anything. So in casual settings (unrated, of course) it can be alright to have other drinks and maybe some food, since the game is just for fun anyway, as long as consideration is displayed. But for the most part I'd keep it to a glass of water especially in rated games.

I consider excessive eating an excellent pshycological weapon and believe it compliments my collection of off-the-board tactics rather nicely.

I think drinking is fine, and I've seen quite a few people eat small snacks or things during games. As long as it's done quietly, I don't have a problem with it. I've done it myself, but usually, I walk away from the board to eat a granola bar or something quickly, then come back. In games with long time controls, this can help maintain energy if the game lasts 5-6 hours or more.

Rockstar is awesome, but a snifter of brandy is far more chess snobbish
