In classical chess the high level players very often castle in the same directions. They usually choose King side castling, because it is faster. When they castle on the same side the games are not as attractive as when they castle in opposite sides of the chessboard.

The idea is.... opponents have to castle in different sides. This is the only rule that breakes the classic frame. Every thing else is the same with classical chess.

If one color (white) castles on the King’s side then the other color (black) can only castle (if he/she wants) on the Queen’s side and the opposite.

Some thoughts about opposite side castling:

  • We see interesting games and more attacking chess.
  • There is always the possibility of an attack against the opponent King.
  • If you don't attack first, you are going to be under attack.
  • Both sides can push their pawns forward to set a fast attacking plan.
  • A pawn storm can destroy the enemy's position.
  • You have to make threats faster than your opponent.

Very interesting. It does sort of limit the possibilities, however.

Chess is flourishing did you see how many members Chess.com has? 32 million! No need to change the rules of the game, that would just be weird.
