That church messed up his mind big-time! Bobby Fischer had mental problems to start with, but when people he trusted took advantage of him, that really hurt him. The Worldwide Church of God was about nothing but money, sex and power. When they saw Bobby Fischer they saw nothing but money. They should've seen a man who was seeking help. Ok, they went after Bobby for money. Who did they target for sex and power?

It's all in the history of the church you can find it on the Internet.

In fact that's one of the main reasons Bobby Fischer left the church.

From the wiki: "Armstrong saw in it a description of national characteristics of contemporary descendants of Jacob, and deduced that the United States, the British Commonwealth and several countries situated in northwestern Europe were actually the Lost Tribes of Israel"

Maybe this explains part of his later hatred of the US.

The 1992 Fischer - Spassky Rematch.

fabelhaft

#43: "Fischer is the second American ever to hold the title, which must be contested every three years. The first was Alexander Alehkin in 1937"

I used to think that if Fischer had been more well-rounded and had less psychological and sociological issues, or at least had found a productive way to deal with then outside of chess, he might have followed a path similar to Ken Rogoff or even Joshua Waitzkin.

Hola Batichica,

Why "even"? I think that you used "even" as if Waitzkin acomplishments were bigger than those of Rogoff, it's like that? but:

Waitzkin is an IM, Rogoff is a GM.

Waitzin is a Tai Chi Champion, Rogoff is a Harvard Professor.

Waitzkin was a Chessmaster Colaborator, Rogoff was the IMF Chief Economist.

DrFrank124c

Thanx 4 the article, we Brooklynites still love Bobby!

Like Rogoff, he could have possibly followed an intellectual career, something people connect with chess players, or even like Waitzkin, possibly an athletic one - because of Fischer's competitiveness and overall physical condition (when he was younger), he might have been able to follow a physical career.

Is that a non-sequitor?
I hadn't heard of chess, other than as a word, yet in 1992 either.

So how did Fischer do at the tournament in Yugoslavia?

He won 17.5 - 12.5.

HonzaZvolsky

In #31 I like: "He(Bobby Fischer) plays a vicious game of tennis, darting around the court like a madman."

:o))

(what I find funny here is the way he moved on the court. I am not relating to his later years)

Are you sure? I was just looking on Wikipedia, and I think the tournament that the newspaper article mentioned was the Interzonal, where Fischer scored 12/20, qualifying for the Candidates Tournament.

Sorry Macer, I was talking about the Fischer - Spassky 1992 Rematch, since it was in Yugoslavia.

Anyway at least I posted a Fischer miniature for the Fischer Fans.
