I am 1600 online rapid (Rapid is what I play the most). What is the right balance between play and study for me, if I want to some time become a master?

In other words, what % of my time should be spent playing vs studying?

Thanks

your goal is too high. aim for 1800, then for 2000, then for 2200.

i would recommend 50/50, then 60/40, then 70/30 with the higher percent being for studying

Yes, I meant that my long term plan is to become a master. My specific goal at the moment is 1800 by summer of 2021.

ok, good.

SHOULD YOU PLAY A LOT OF RAPID BECAUSE THATS WHAT I DO

playing rapid is good, but you need to study chess as well to improve

How do you know what to play after developing your pieces when you don't know what to play and tehre are no tactics? How do you know what pieces do you exchange and what pieces do you keep? How important is to keep the bishop pair?

what pieces to exchange is simply: trade your bad ones for their good ones

bishop pair is good, but not always. typically, they are only good in open positions. knights are good too!

if you don't know what to play, try to create threats. come up with a plan that lasts a few moves. ex. I want to lift my rook, throw my queen on the same file, and checkmate him

Also, what do you think about playing a lot of openings without studying them very much?

not gonna lie, pretty dumb... you really should try to analyze your openings and understand them before playing them. unless you are like 100 rated. then don't worry about studying openings. but players of all levels should try to understand their openings

My parents just wont buy me a uscf membership, can i still improve by playing online?

yes you can! i would recommend playing lots of games online, since no one really has a chance to play any tournaments anyways. eventually you should get a USCF membership though (only for US people, lol tongue.png)

black

normally 2 rooks is slightly better than queen.

in that position though, you'll have to calculate exact variations. black's king is very unsafe, and white has at least a draw i think (perpetual)
