Fritz 8 Chess Software

My computer is compatible with Fritz 8.  That's based on my own research and recent comments from the Fritz people.

Since the discussion on here about Fritz 8, I contacted the people who produce Fritz.  They sent me a link for the latest upgrade and I installed it.  It seems simpler to do than the one offered here.

Now, everytime I finish a game, I've been playing rated games, music is played in my "honor."  It's very annoying, they play an entire number, and my question is if you know of any settings to turn off the music?

I also asked the Fritz outfit if it is possible to have sound without inserting Disc #2.  They said to copy all the talk files in the TALK directory to my hard disk.  I asked them twice where on my hard disk should I copy the files.  No answer from Fritz yet.  Maybe answers will arrive during the regular business days.

I did copy my TALK directory files from Disc #2 to my desktop into a directory called TALK.  That doesn't work.  To get sound, I still have to inssert Disc #2.

Any ideas?

Yeah, I think I can help you, but I have some work to do right now. I should have time to check it out in a few hours.

Could you help me out and either post the link for the latest update or PM the link to me? I'd like to see if it's more recent than the one I have.

Later...

OK,

1) To turn the music off, go into the menu system:

Tools --> Options... --> Mutimedia tab. In the drop box at the bottom of the options box, pick "No music".

2) Talk files:

You actually did the right thing, but you only did part of  the job. You now have to remove the write protection from the talk files, then tell Fritz where you put the talk files.

The Help file explains it in more detail. Go to the Help menu, click on "Help...", then click on the "Search" tab. In the box where it tells you to type in the keyword to find, type in "talk" (without the quotes). Now click on the "List Topics" button. Now, in the larger box below, labeled "Select topic to display", click on "Copy Talk files to hard disk", then click on the "Display" button at the bottom. That should bring up the detailed instructions for how to get the Talk files working.

I copied your instructions for the talk files to a Word document, so I could print it out.

Before I start "rasselin" with talk, are the talk files only for the amusing comments by Fritz?  If so, I would rather keep Fritz silent.

I honestly can't remember if I ever had Talk activated. If I did, it would have been on my old PC. But I can't remember anything about it, so maybe I never activated it. (I typically don't care for a program trash talking me, so I tend to disable that stuff.)

Maybe I'll load up Talk and check it out. And then I'll probably unload it 30 minutes later. Smile

Edit - Yeah, I loaded up the Talk files. It's just occasional trash talk. I don't care for that stuff, so I deleted the files. (I never found the ECO directory that the Help file discussed. I even checked both disks.)

@pizzapier - Thanks for the update link from CB support. I downloaded it, and it's the same hash signature as the file I already have; In other words, they never went beyond update 30 for Fritz 8, and either link will get you the same update.

ood to know about the talk files.  I won't bother with the talk either.  Now, can I start Fritz 8 and bypass the request to mess with the talk files?

Also, regarding the update and/or the talk files, I got a zip file labeled "fritz532" on my desktop.  Could that be something related to the talk files I saved to my desktop?

In an adventuress mood yesterday, I unzipped the file and nothing happened.

Last problem for today is I finished a game, I think it was a rated game and I set my level at club player.  I resigned and the clock kept ticking and the computer froze.  Any explanations for that?

Maybe the best idea might be for me to uninstall Fritz 8 and the "update" and reinstall the original disc.  With inputs and help from you and troggie, I know a lot more about how to navigate the menus for Fritz 8.

There has to be some way to turn off the nagging about the talk files. (It doesn't bug me about it.) Maybe in the options menu you haven't turned off the talk setting, so it keeps nagging you about it.

I haven't a clue about the fritz532 zip file. What file(s) are inside the zip?

As far as your PC freezing after a game, that's also a head scratcher. If it happens too many times, then maybe some troubleshooting is in order. I guess it wouldn't hurt to uninstall/reinstall Fritz.

I have got it to where I can challenge Fritz 8 on a high level, but not the highest.  This is good practice for me.  i just played a game with Openings and that went good with not problems.

i set the conditions before the game.  That seems to work without a hitch and I get somewhat familiar with what's available.  At first I was setting the parameters before the first move was made, but that does not make sense now.

I think Fritz 8 will be a good training tool for me as it stands.  If it does that without too many glitches, i am satisfied.

I'll send the contents of fritz532 to you in PM.
