lots and lots of blitz and bullets.
Frustrations with getting back into chess

Maybe try to enter an otb tournament. This could help regain your focus.
Also bunches of tactics help removing the dust
I have gone through this, not to this extent ,but yes..there is no replacement for playing plenty of OTB games with different players .If u hav retained the passion u will hit back soon. One more suggestion..never really give up chess completly for some yearsif u r passionate and planing to come back.
Too much smartphone, tablets, messengers etc. By being interrupted in the middle of focusing enough times, the ability to focus can be damaged.

Take the time to slowly go through some games of Morphy and Nezhmetdinov. Try to work out how they work the pieces--use a machine if you have to, but only when you can't find the reason for why or why not--and soon you'll find you'll be saccing pieces instead of dropping them. They were both terrific in handling the intiative, and working out the tactics will make you more aware of the opportunities your opponents will present you. Besides, it's a lot of fun to go through the games.

My chess skills (previously awful) improved (now they are just occasionally not bad) since I started playing on a real chessboard and studied stuff on it. And yes, tactical exercises do help to take the rust off

I would recommend going over at least some of the basics again. Depending on the amount of time, you have been away, and how good you used to be, plus what you actually remember of that knowledge, will usually determine how quickly you will recover what was lost. Memory is important in chess, and no one's memory is perfect. At least that I know of.
Go back over your basic mating patterns, there is a lot of them, go over your basic tactical ideas again, I would also go back over pawn structures, and new opening ideas, because if you have been away from chess for years, some things have definitely changed.
Chess mentor has excellent courses, and lessons, which you can decide on which ones to practice first. Chess is a beautiful game, you don't have to be a master to love it, nor enjoy it for your entire life. Good luck.
I've been away from chess for a long time, and I'm having severe difficulties focusing/studying/training to get back into tournament shape. I'm unable to focus for any decent period of time on material, whether it's analyzing games, attempting to train tactics, or working with books. Although still positionally sound, I'm playing sloppy chess tactically and am showing very poor technique due to difficulties with concentration. Does anyone who's had to deal with a similar transition back into chess have any tips for how to regain what it feels like I've lost? What I'm trying to do is just be patient, but it's been about a month and a half now that I've been trying to study or get back to work with no progress. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
