Future Chess Tourists

So we've already discussed current chess tourists, e.g. Peter Leko and Etienne Bacrot, players that are just floating around drawing their games and achieving nothing.  These guys shouldn't be invited to any tournaments.

Now I want to give my predictions for future chess tourists.  In a few years these kids will inherit the "draw master" title and thus be completely worthless and useless to the chess community.

Chess Tourists

1. Wesley So (just like Abu Sayyaf, he is going nowhere. Mediocre and mundane)

2. Fabiano Caruana (the next Peter Leko. His love for draws is beginning to assert itself.  Nothing special here)

3. Parimarjan Negi (bought his chess tourist ticket from Anand's travel agency. In a few years he will be totally irrelevant.)

Having said that, my chess artist list is:

Anish Giri and Jorge Cori Tello. They've demonstrated a combination of natural talent and fighting spirit.

bjazz

Which list will you belong to, pray?

rubygabbi

I'm not so sure that chess masters need to adopt a style that makes them crowd pleasers, nor do I understand why "drawmasters" need to be punished by not being invited to tournaments. Would you not invite a Petrosian to a tournament?

BTW, I thought the definition of a "chess tourist was someone playing for a country of which he was not a citizen. Am I mistaken?

I don't know much about chess or those GMs, but I could see that it would be kinda boring if the game's drawn all the time.

A draw means that you were too weak to win, and too cowardly to lose.

Vlad_Akselrod

I think this thread is highly offensive and doesn't make sense at all. The chess characteristics offered by topic starter Mr N have virtually nothing to do with reality. He must be the Tello guy himself since I never heard about such a player. Surprised

ivandh

^ draws a lot

bjazz

Agreed. Now let's sit back and wait for the thread to miraculously close.

I'm an old-timer.  I miss the days when Tal, Korchnoi, Larsen, Fischer, Kasparov, Spassky, Stein, Karpov and, yes, Petrosian would excite the chessworld.  I'm sure that I'm alone in believing that after Kasparov retired, no-one was good enough to be world champion.

-waller-

Yeah, chess is rubbish now - all these stupid drawn games. I miss the good old days of Anderrsen and Chigorin and Blackburne! I remember seeing those guys on TV.

malibumike

Wow!  You must have a really great TV.

BadChi

Worthless and useless to the chess community?

What does that even mean? If they are obeying the rules, they are playing chess. I don't think the goal is to be innovative and exciting. I'm ok with it being "boring." Chess is what it is.

ivandh, that's inappropriate. Look at the truth value of someone's statements, don't attack the individual personally.

Yeah, I inherited it from my grandfather, Henry VIII.

Waller,

Whose games do you prefer to go over--Adams or Short?

Garry Kasparov launched the term "chess tourists" --

Funny, it seems less arrogant when a player of Garry's stature uses it though.

What's wrong with a draw? If you draw against a higher rated player shouldn't that be considered a success? To get such high ratings these people did not just draw against everyone they face. Critiquing a draw... what has the world come to!?!?!

I guess this question may be answered by the upcoming championship match.

p.s. did anyone see that video of kramnik saying that it would be better for chess if anand won the match, it was on Amber's official site.
