Hi, I was in the middle of a very interesting game with lots of time remaining on both sides when I got the message that the game was canceled without any explanation of any sort.... can someone explain what happened? Is that a new kind of cheat (as if the regular kind was not enough...)? I’m asking because I was ahead... thanks for your help

No, in the middle of the night, California time, they sometimes restart the servers. It cancels all ongoing games.
Sometimes they give warnings.
Sometimes they don't.
I don't agree with you. It cannot be a coincidence that they always retart the server when ever I have huge advantage even a mate chance in 1-2-3 move/moves agains a much more stronger player than me. I strongly believe that this is a new kind of cheating that chess.com has to find a solution and give the appropriate penalty to the cheater.
Same here, I had mate in 2 against an Indian guy and just when I’m about to win the game was cancelled??

Live server restart. I know there was one scheduled for early this morning, US time. When the server is restarted, all ongoing games are aborted.
