Garry Kasparov arrested

Garry Kasparov was my favorite chess player as I was learning about chess. He has been arrested for protesting the sentencing of a punk rock band to 2 years in prison for "hooliganism"

Kasparov claims that he was arrested with no charges and when he insisted on being told why he was being arrested he was beaten by police.

I always find it interesting when you learn about what makes a world chess champion feel inspired outside of chess. I think I like Kasparov a little more knowing he is fighting for freedom of speech and against corruption.

Do you see it differently? Do you live in Russia and have an opinion?

That is pretty sad. I support Kasparov. The Russian government needs some refreshment.

Kasparov is a true hero, not just an outstanding chess player.

I do live in a part of Russia distant from Moscow and find the way police handled Gary Kasparov outrageous. Police brutality in Moscow is out of control. I watched a video of Kasparov's detention on youtube and it is disquieting. Gary Kasparov is a person inspiring awe in people around the globe and I cannot think what went in the mind of a police officer who deliberately sent his troops to pick him up out of the crowd, pack him into a van and beat him.

He has been acquitted! He talks about how unusual it was for the judge to even let the defense have a chance to show evidence. I found this story very intresting. I never realized Russia had such severe issues with police brutality and the judicial system.
