Kasparov said before that he doesn't have the stamina to compete in classical time controls, but he can still make a mark in rapid and blitz.

Kasparov has never been one to underestimate himself. I expect he will pick and choose a few rapid events like St. Louis, but he won't be competing for the Grand Prize in the tour. Btw, Carlsen has it almost wrapped up after winning the first two.

Want to take that back?

Nope. Who do you think will take the prize if not Carlsen?

Now Kasparov became nr 9 in the Rapid. I wonder how he will do in Blitz. But I think normal chess is the best way to see how strong he still is.

Kasparov needs to go back into retirement.  This performance is just embarrassing.   :/   I'm very disappointed.   He ruined his legendary status by playing this tourney.

Not at all.

Fischer didn't play great in his return to chess in 1992. Kasparov is playing a much faster time control of course, but can still redeem himself with a decent performance tomorrow.

What?!?!

To Play after 12 years from retirement angainst Top 10 players in the world and Draw A LOT of times and win 2 games....is bad?? For me is a nice torurnament... i am sure that the next tournaments will be better! For me is only just matter of practics

Fabio, everything is relative.

If I had the result Kasparov is having, I'd be celebrating all night every night.

Kasparov is perhaps the greatest player ever. His result is an embarrassment to his record.

I'm hoping he uses this as a platform to get back into more rapid/blitz tournaments, only with increments instead of delays. The delay on the clock has ruined many interesting games in this tournament. The organizers need to take notice and stop using the delay setting in future events.

I not agree

Kasparov just won a nice game against Fabiano Caruana.

Damn, la leche, that's not ruining his legend, for sure.

Exactly.

Caruana is n°4 in the world.

You dont mate n°4 in the world for a coincidence.

Is only a matter of training and practic.

Dont play for years and years is not good for a chess player.

But after some games....you come back to a good level.

I hope Kasparov dont retire....i am sure next tournaments will be better.....!!

Does anyone remember when Mark Spitz came out of retirement and tried to make the Olympic team?

It happened. He failed. Not too many people outside the sport noticed.

Don't remember Spitz at all except he had those 7 Golds record, but I know my hero Phelps did come out of retirement and won a couple of Olympic Golds more wink.png

In ~1990, Mark Spitz, an excellent chess player, came back to the pool and tried to make the Olympic team in the Butterfly, his best event. His all-time best from 1972 was just a bit too slow to qualify. He swam a respectable 58 second 100, but that was nowhere near good enough to make it to the Trials, let alone the Olympic team.

Interesting!

My all-time best in 100 fly is 1:03 (at age 14). If I trained for a couple of years more, I could say I was as fast as Spitz 😜

I very much respect Kasparov for coming out of retirement and playing in this tournament.  Even though he did finish tied with Anand (How about irony!) in 8th, he had good positions in most of his games the whole tournament!  After Chessbase provides these games in their Mega-database update, I'm going to analyze all his games and study them!  I think he played incredible for being away competitively for so long and not playing in practice tournaments to get ready for this one.  These guys he played have been playing regularly and are some of the best!  Kasparov did say he just wanted to bring attention back to the game, which he did BIG TIME!  I would say that alone is very successful!  My hat's off to you, Kasparov, the greatest player ever!!!!
