Fischer played Botvinnik only once because Botvinnik had more important things to do than being champion for 40 years. When Fischer appeared Botvinnik was working on his academic career. He had no interest in beating Fischer.

Botvinnik Fide titlist:

1948 (fixed tournament) - 1957 (Lost to Smslov)

1958 (Smyslov throws rematch on orders) - 1960 (Lost to Tal)

1961 (Deathly ill Tal force to play rematch, loses) -1963 (Lost to Petrosian)

Botninnik held the FIDE title for 13 years, and never managed to win a title match as champion, such was the Soviet chicanery.

Utter Nonsense. Botvinnik won more matches for the title than Bobby Fischer has ever dreamed of.

The OP and GreedyPawnEater are just trolling.  That is something we should all be able to agree on.

50 years old professor Botvinnik drew Fischer very easily in the only game they played. If Botvinnik hadnt decided to pursue academic career Fischer would never had a chance to win anything.

That was game #39 in Fischer's all-time chess bestseller, "My 60 memorable games."

Larry Evans wrote:

"This dramatic meeting between the generations took place on Board 1 (in the Varna Chess Olympiad), after it was rumored that Botvinnik would be given a 'rest day' against the American team.  But it was fated that Fischer, at last, albeit with Black, would have a crack at the World Champion.

Walking into a prepared variation, Fischer promptly refutes it.  'The reader can guess that my equanimity was wrecked,' confesses Botninnik ... Nervously, he procedes to run his still-tenable position downhill."

It took the entire Soviet contingent, in overnight adjournment analysis, to find a drawing chance.

In his book, Fischer demonstrates the winning line he missed, to allow Botvinnik to escape.

You really feel that way ?....that they cheated ?

Chess isn't gin rummy or poker or bridge. Everything known is in front of you. There are no secrets.

Am I being naive ?

Factually incorrect.  He drew Bronstein in 1951 (12-12) and Smyslov in 1954 (12-12).  He lost to Smyslov in 1957 (9.5-12.5) and Tal in 1960 (8.5-12.5).  Four title defenses - no wins.

The Soviets engaged in collusion all the time.

In my opinion, Fischer's big weakness was when he did not have an initiative. Fischer's big scores in the candidates matches came from his extreme pressure on his opponents. With Geller and Tal, he was not able to achieve pressure, since the game became very messy. Contrary to popular belief, Fischer was not the best calculator or great in tactics - remember he was famous for his handling of bishop versus knight, strategically.

Remember also, Tal played mind games with Fischer, such as the famous story when Tal asked Fischer why he wrote his move down in Russian.

Without pressure, Fischer himself crumbled,

of course in my humble opinion.

he'd have been muted. could be some brain thing that the staff are sympathetic to.

Reasons: Geller was an expert in Sicilian and Kings Indian . so most of Fischers home analysis just fell short.

Tal. made Fischer into an unchartered territory most of the times by around move 20 or so. coming with the sharp moves every time was Fischers  weakness.

Geller beat Fischer more than once in the 6 Be2 najdorf which is simply amazing . It seems none of the top GMs today play 6 Be2 against the najdorf .

Naka, Jakovenko, plus a few more... but the big experts of the system were Geller, and Karpov.
