Some of those engines you've uploaded are commercial. It's probably not a good idea to violate copyright law. Someone will soon report you, and a mod will delete the link, I'm sure.

I did delete them.

Left this note in the comments section of the blog for the DB as well:

********************************************************************

Just as a note, Windows Explorer still does not like the zip file. WinZip and 7Zip extract it fine.
Windows says you need 5.99 PB (that's Petabytes; a petabyte is a million gigabytes happy.png ). Thanks Bill.
Not sure why this is happening but apparently it has to do with 32 bit and 64 bit headers in the file.
Use one of the extractors and you should be good.

All non - commercial.

How can I raise the popularity levels of this database? This is not a virus!

I don't know how many people have downloaded your database or what your expectations are, but I suspect that not too many people need super large games databases. I don't use them on a regular basis, although it IS nice to have one if needed.

Regarding the virus issue, it's only a PGN text file, so I think it's pretty much a non-issue. Of course, people are free to check their downloaded file with an antivirus program.

I did notice that the link for the Windows download in Post #1 is bad. I had to download the file using the link on your blog. If you fix that, you might find the number of downloads will increase. Wink

Also, large PGN databases are extremely slow. I suspect most people prefer to use either ChessBase or Scid formatted databases. Myself, I took the PGN file and converted it to Scid format. (An added advantage of the Scid format is that it's much more compact and would be a much smaller download.)

When I imported the database to Scid vs PC it had some games with illegal moves. I looked up one of them "Kulaots vs Janocha" and turned out the game exists four times in your database, one time with two extra plies with the illegal move. Then looked up some FIDE World Cup games because I remember that King or Millibase had multiple duplicates and indeed for some games there are three instances of the same game. And that is just the games that I checked... also countless of useless online, blitz and exhibition games. Conclusion: your base still needs a lot of filtering work to do, good luck with your project!

I think @EscherehcsE hits it on the head.

There is not a huge call for large databases like this.

It is nice to have if needed on occasion but a lot of people have no need for them.

Size isn't everything.

There's an extremely large free database of all the games played on another site available. Unfortunately, the quality of the games isn't great.

I'd rather have a relatively small database with games from titled players and correspondence games than the largest db I could find.

I downloaded and extracted the file in Windows. Chessbase is showing 802702 games in the database for some reason.

Scid for Linux shows the same number of games.  I'm not sure which link I clicked, but I'm downloading again from the latest link just for fun.

I downloaded the Windows file and there are almost 7 million games in there, but Scid is still showing 802702.  Odd coincidence that Chessbase and Scid both show the same wrong number of games.

Two of my OTB games are in there, both from the 1993 US Open and both under 20 moves.  A loss to a 2279 player and a win against a 1744 player.  I was 2021 at the time.  I was having a terrible tournament and neither game is particularly educational.  I have no idea why they're in there.

Yep, just glancing through the games in Scid vs. PC, it looks like over half of the database may be duplicate games. (I have yet to find a game that doesn't have at least one duplicate.) I'd say he has a little cleanup to do. Wink

Btw, FICS has over 200 million games available on their free database.

Size isn't everything.

Maybe you should share it somewhere other than Google Drive. I imagine some people will ignore it just because of that.

edit: the exploit mechanism is certainly different (not a direct link) but some people might be very wary

Molotok89

Yeah, size isn´t evereything that´s true. But does someone know if a database with only regular (classical) games exist? Would be interested in something like that.

SmyslovFan

Molotok, you can filter almost any large database by type of game now. So, if you have a large db that contains a mix of games, you already have that smaller db.

Molotok89

Scid doesn´t have such feature obviously. The pgn notation doesn´t always include the info on what kind of event it is and ChessBase is not free. Some other sites like chessgames.com require premium accounts to access more features as well..  I don´t know of any free and easy accessible database where you are allowed to filter classical games and download all games at once, hence the question.
