Bughouse bugs me too!

Bughouse lost it's charm when open communication became the norm/permitted. There always seems to be one player (higher rated) who wants to dominate the game by playing both sides.

In years past the variant was fun and entertaining when open communication of telling your partner specific moves to make was taboo. People won't believe this, but they've never played the game like it was meant.

Played  OTB Bughouse in the 70's in So.Cal in all the skittles rooms of all the Tourny's going on then. Very popular, more so then than now.

What was permitted communication was almost universal. 1st was the strictest "rule" - no telling your partner specific moves to make. Perhaps 8 tables going playing risers. A lot of swapping and mixing of teams. A few very dominate players if allowed to tell the partners what moves to make, is unfair in several ways. They are playing their strategy on their board, know what material is quickly needed, and have their partner sacrifice.

Open communication has led to the game losing it's old charm, the challenge and it's sportsmanship.

Stuff as I need a pawn, ok to sack a Queen? I'm mating, etc., etc is fine. But the idea was to deter 1 player from playing both boards - which easily happens when one player is much stronger and open discussion is allowed. This thread illustrates a potential issue - players simply resign before playing as their assigned opponent is lower rated and can't know if they'll listen to his preferred moves.

Internet Bughouse started out this way, with restrictions on what could be said during games. But it was soon learned it was impossible to enforce as communication outside the server is readily available. Only then did it become "acceptable" for players to discuss any and all moves on both boards. Besides the best move element, just as important is the time element.

It's a Team game. Both players play their equal share. Think of tennis. Can one player magically be substituted to take their partners shot?

The idea is to have fun ... live and die by your partner.

Permitting players to suggest specific moves defeats the team concept. What ? Think players will get together and pool their thoughts? In a 5 minute game. No ... most often the stronger player suggests the move. If the weaker player takes it upon himself to play another move - how long will that team last or ever play again if it loses the game?
