i am 21 and i picked up chess recently and i am already bored from it, its so boring, i am always ending up in the same positions because of theory, if i dont play these lines my oponnent gets into them if they are playing white, i am glad i quit now before i am 50 years old regretting wasting my young days obsessing over this stupid game, the only thing that sucks us into this game is the feeling of winning and destroying our opponent, there is no creativity in this game because everything is so predictable, just like what bobby fischer said it was a good game 200 years ago now it sucks

Under 1400 rating, online blitz is a horrible, brutish existence. random illogical moves flying at you, queen darting all over the board, all out attacks, etc.

the worst thing about playing poorly isn't losing, its being forced to play against lower quality opponents.

He is the same quality as them.

I mean I'm going to guess the OP made this as someone who had known about scholars mate r the fried liver attack beat him and he is sulking.

Like I mean seriously? Your complaining that other people are beating you.... As they put time into improving?

I don't remember Usane Bolt running up to his mum after he didn't get gold in the World Championships and shouting "Not fair! He practised before the race!"

If you call chess “boring” as a GM that’s one thing, but when you’re 900 rated you don’t have much room to talk (just as I don’t being over 1500). And of course, the irony of it all is that you’re still playing lol

The only people who thinks chess is boring are beginners.

who dislikes chess and if you dont like chess why are you even here

I cringe when I see posts that gush on and on about the "creativity" in chess.  The reality of chess is that if you've been playing for decades you're repeating the same patterns endlessly.  I gave up chess for 30 years because the players are also socially boring and usually obsessive.  I re-started playing about 5 years ago and I'm already considering giving it up again (and for good).  Compared to other hobbies like music and reading, chess is dull as dirt.  Just because a super-GM plays a fabulous combination every now and then can't disguise the fact that 99.9% of all games are decided by cheapos and combinations that you learned from Fred Reinfeld's books.  Chess is just fine to pass the time but as a serious pursuit I think it's laughable.

At your level chess probably isn't very interesting and unless you have some passion for the game, improvement is difficult.  So probably a good move on your part to find something else to do with your spare time.  Good luck...

This statement has always bugged me "At your level Chess probably isn't very interesting."

It's very snobby; as if the game's inherent value comes from a player's understanding of the game rather than it being implicit within the game itself. It's also an insult to Chess.
Ever wondered why the family groans when you bring out the Chessboard? It's because THEY KNOW. They know Chess sucks!

Chess has only stood the test of time not because of its gameplay, but this aura of genius surrounding it, a relic of the cold war - Russian intellectual dominance (which was an erroneous claim even then, and especially now).
What's so genius about pushing figurines across an 8x8 grid? I do volunteer anyone to change my mind on that, let alone prove that Chess is actually a good game.

"Hey son, put away that stodgy old chessboard and play some crokinole with the family! Oh stop giving me that face and bring your old man a beer!"

I am with you. For the past few months Im just getting bored with chess, everything is a repeated move. Basically nothing new comes out of it, so now I just play without even thinking or even trying.

I've been playing for 52 years. I've never found it boring. Whether it's playing out the variations of any particular move I'm considering (and then analyzing who's better off and why), rebounding from a busted opening, sensing that I *can* win the endgame but it's going to take another 50 moves or so, and so on, it's never dull or boring

Like boring is a bad thing? If you want a real rush, try being an independent business owner.

I agree. Chess is a waste of time. Why spend your mental energy playing this unless you are getting paid for it? It doesn't do you any good and there are way more fun games out there. Chess is really only for the top .0001% who play it.

Many people are saying that chess is boring because you play the same moves over and over again and though I don't mean to be snobbish but it's impossible-through calculation or common sense.I had once been a beginner and though I don't know my current chess level (I mostly play on Lichess so don't bother pointing out my chess.com stats since the layout is not what I am used to),I have played at National level for my school despite being unrated. It has never happened to me that I play the same moves. The game's character almost always changes even if the middlegame position is the same.As to earning money,I don't know who told you or that maybe it's not on chess.com but I have won many cash prizes on Lichess groups.Search on Facebook or even try to google. It is there. And socially boring? Seriously?I have many friends who are good vchess players and are not boring.I myself can say that I'm not exactly socially inept.I feel pity for you to meet a few people who might be like that but a few players don't represent the whole chess community. One question (open for everyone)-Why does every beginner quit so early and then criticise whatever hobby they chose? Not being sassy or insulting here but I never understood it.Would be nice if someone enlightened me.

Notice how everyone whingeing about how boring chess is, is currently online and playing chess. OP posted this topic more than four years ago and is active today in the Elite league.

Perhaps you don't enjoy rolling balls of poo around, but to a dung beetle, that's a very enjoyable hobby. Certain peoples' minds work differently than yours; so if they're having fun, what's the problem? (talking about chess players here btw, not dung beetles).

Pretty sure the current OP isn't actually the original OP. The site use to alloe the first post to be deleted and the second poster would inherit the post.

I have inherited a number of posts like that. A lot of members got in the habit of quoting the first post due to that, before the ability was removed.

Ah, yes, that does make more sense given the message that was posted.

That makes me wonder how many average to good chess players are business owners.

Let me rephrase that, successful business owners. That could even be a whole new topic.
